Recommend Me Some Different Slides

Okay, I'm trying to expand my slide collection for various types and sixes of slides to see what I like best. I generally play on my pinky, and seem to like the shorter length slides best normally. But sometimes, I"ll slap on the full length slides onto my middle finger for more chordal stuff.

So far, I have two glass slides (both Jim Dunlop, thick wall, one tall and one short), a full length Jim Dunlop chrome slide (that I don't like, too harsh), and a full length super thick Joe Perry slide (that is either porcelain or ceramic). So far the two I like the most are the short glass one for general slide playing and soloing for the quick warm tone, and the full length ceramic Joe Perry slide on acoustics for that really fat earthy tone (but it is a tad muddy sounding).

Recommend me some other materials and types to try. I've come close to buying those wine bottle slides they sell in stores that I'd like to try; and I want to try a Coricidin bottle slide, but they're all WAYYYY too floppy for my pinky finger (I have those thin long spider finger like Johnny Winter haha).

Try them all.

I know thats easy to say, but you can't really have too many.

I have a DUnlop thick wall lined with a piece of Velcro so it fits better ion my finger. I carry this one with me all the time. Its not my favorite, but it works. My preference is the Dunlop Mudslides. Porcelain ..... its thick in tone yet warm. It fits my finger well. I have 3 of these. I also have a Dunlop Moonhine, which is ceramic. This is good but I prefer the Mudslide. Here are a few sites to investigate on your own.

The Diamond bottlenecks are made from a variety of materials, but I have played with the Lead Crystal one and it is awesome. Its also $50. But it sounds terrific.

I would also recommend Brass and metal. I have even experimented with copper. They all work, its just a matter of which will work for you!

Re: Recommend Me Some Different Slides

I have them all including a REAL coricidin slide. I looked for years for that one and scored at an antique shop.

The wine bottle is pretty cool in my opinion, but (there is always a but) you have to know how to master that curve.

Re: Recommend Me Some Different Slides

is there really a big tonal difference between the solid bottle glass and the Dunlop pyrez "glass" slides? I like my small pinky glass pyrex slide, but I wish it's tone was fatter and more dense

I think I might try out one of those Diamond Bottleneck Redhouse slides; maybe a straight cut, rolled edge, light green one with the finger notch. I also want to find a small stout ceramic one similar to that Joe Perry, so I'll probably look around for a Dunlop Mudslide somewhere. Also making a note to find a brass one for acoustic

are there any other good slide makers out there that make any good custom old school glass bottle or porcelain slides? well, at a decent price? $25 bucks for a slide is definatley pushing the boundries as is for those Diamond Bottlenecks

Re: Recommend Me Some Different Slides

I have the dunlop blues bottle, which gets me close enough to those Derek Trucks/Duane Allman/Warren Haynes tones I'm after when playing slide opposed to going on a goose chase for a vintage bottleneck. I also had a smaller brass one and a dunlop mudslide I believe (the blue painted ceramic one). The mudslide sounded just like the blues bottle but had this stupid harsh high end to it so screw that. And I always hated the brass one. So I just stick with the blues bottle, even though it gets all sweaty inside, I like its feel and sound the best, better than other glass/pyrex ones with the other end open. Nothing windex once in a while cant fix.

I tried all kinds of slides and ended up using my homemade ones.
Dunlops glass slides always seem to thin and bright sounding compared to my wine bottle slides.

The only problem is that I have thin pinkys and in the summer the slide used to move around or even slip off my finger.

One night while I was playing drunk it came to me that I could stick some tape to the insides of the slide and end the problem, no more sliping, sometime later while I was about to throw away an old mouse pad I realised instead of tape I could just use the mouse pad spongy material and thus the glass slide that doesn't slip and absorbs sweat was born.

Personally I find the price they ask for bottleneck slides ridiculous.
At the moment my stock of bottleneck slides is pretty low, because I gave a few to some friends.

But enough talky here are some pics:

I use this one mainly on my ring finger

This is the small one with mouse pad insides, only fits my pink gives me alot of control on the slide.

And now for the whole family.
From the left you can see the small slide, the big slide for the ring finger (upside down), the metal slide used to be a socket wrench adapter (also upside down) and in front center the little green guy, I use it in the middle of the middle finger I still have complete use of the finger and I can use the slide on a couple of strings for a cool effect or vibrato.

Re: Recommend Me Some Different Slides

I use a piece of Velcro to hold the slide on my finger so it won't move. It works well and I find it gives me better precision.

Re: Recommend Me Some Different Slides

I can't find a Dunlop Bluesbottle that fits my pinky like I like. I might just buy one anyways and fill it to hell with Velcro or something to make it fit haha
