Slide players, recommend a glass slide

Re: Slide players, recommend a glass slide

Might look into the porcelain slides. Haven't decided yet. It's not like I'm shooting to be the next Slide Guitar King, y'know?

Re: Slide players, recommend a glass slide

i have ceramic and porcelain slides and like em both. find one that fits your finger and youll be good to go. they are almost as breakable as glass though so be careful

Re: Slide players, recommend a glass slide

yup when they shatter they are nasty!

I have one of the Boneyard short ceramic slides that sounds killer. I can only use the heavier slides when I am sitting down though

As you can see I have a bunch. I really don't play too much slide anymore, but I prefer the Mudslides by Dunlop. They have a nice heavy wall and a reall nice warm tone. I have a California Telecaster that I play most electric slide on tuned to open E but I also have a wood dobro with a sider resonator & a metal(brass) dobro with a biscuit resonator. For a real tradtional sound I use the brass body guitar....

The benefit of a real bottle slide that is tapered like that is it will match the radius of the strings over neck on certain guitars, so you can use less pressure to get to triads, etc.
This is truth. Nothing wrong with those, although they are weird to look at.

Re: Slide players, recommend a glass slide

Story time. In 2010 I developed a nasty ganglion cyst on my left wrist. Not sure how long I had it, but when I hit the third chord to the opening phrase to Aerosmith's Dream On (it's that really dissonant one with a stretch) it sent sharp pain through my hand. The doctor I saw wasn't very positive about my situation, said I would have to have surgery and that the likelihood of me playing guitar again was out the question.

So I'm very upset, sitting in a chair with my Les Paul lying on my lap, and I've all but given up before I see this brass Dunlop slide chilling next to the leg of my chair. I put 2 + 2 =4 and it clicked. Lap steel. So for almost 5 months I simply played with my Les Paul in my lap, experimenting with different slides and strings.

Ultimately I wound up going to another doctor and they did a simple procedure to drain the cyst and all was well. So far it has stayed away, but I kept the slide experience with me. So it worked out!

Re: Slide players, recommend a glass slide

I'm not the world's best slide player but I know a thing or two about buying some slides. I'll say the best slide for bright playing is stainless. Why guys use those on Strats, I'm not sure but that's the trend. Brass has always been a fave for me because it's heavy, it sounds more robust, and it seems to be consistently warm sounding when you finger pick or pluck with a pick itself.

I have a Coricidan bottle that I used for a long time which I liked. It sounded good on any guitar, acoustic or electric, but ultimately it never ever sat on my finger well, so I couldn't play with the damn thing.

The best most consistent sounding and feeling slide I ever have played has been a Dunlop Joe Perry porcelain slide. They have different sized ones, and I'd recommend the thin profile for electric playing.

Porcelains are perfect. They are the best warmth of glass, bright and shiny on electric, and they absorb that finger sweat with the porous inside. They feel great, grip the skin well and look cool. Dunlop has a whole line of porcelains out not just the Joe Perry model. I would highly recommend them. Every slide player needs at least one porcelain in their collection!

I just gave mine to a buddy. It never seemed to fit right. I wear my slide on the ring finger and it was too tigght, so I tried moving it to my pinky but it seemed to put my wrist at an uncomfortable angle so I gave it away.....

Re: Slide players, recommend a glass slide

finding a slide that fits perfectly is such a wonderful thing. i use my ring finger too. i have a red glass bottle from the real bottlenecking company that fits perfect. i have a blue one that is thicker glass and sounds a little better but the red one fits so damn well i deal with the slightly less perfect tone
