Recommend me some Marshalls.......

I went to GC about 3 or so days ago and plugged a Gibson Les Paul Standard into a Mesa Dual Rectifier and a Marshall JCM2000 Dual Super Lead. As usual, I love the distortion on the Mesa Rectifiers but playing through a Marshall JCM2000 Dual Super Lead made me finally realize how ****ty Mesa Rectifier cleans are. For years people have told me Marshall had better cleans and I somewhat ignored it and stuck with Mesa because I was a distortion addict and wasn't very concerned about cleans. Lately I have been more concentrated on getting good clean tone and am in search of a tube head that has good distortion and good cleans. After playing the Marshall JCM2000 Dual Super Lead the other day I have found that Marshall has alot more to offer overall. I was also blown away by the distortion tone I was getting out of the Marshall JCM2000 Dual Super Lead. I guess you could say I'm considering being a trader..... :32: Any other higher gain Marshall Tube Amp recommendations?...... :32: :)

Plexi Reissue?

If you are talking " Gain " as in VOLUME, then yes, the Plexi is LOUD...but it is very clean. ( Has a very high Headroom, stays Loud and Clean ). You will need to attenuate the Plexi to attain full Output Tube Overdrive ( either that, or go Deaf.... ) ... and even then, it tends to lend itself much better to Classic Rock. Sweet Overdrive, Rich Harmonic content. So...the Plexi probably isn't for you ?????

If you just want more and more Distortion...maybe the Marshall Mode 4 ???

When I mentioned gain I was refering to distortion, my bad. :smack: I'll give the Mode 4 a shot but I haven't heard anything good about them yet. Have you personally had any experience with the Mode 4's or have been told about them?

Woah...Marshall having good cleans? That's a first...

But don't take my opinion, I don't like any Marshall's period, except for the 6100LM. It's 6L6 based. ;)

Re: Recommend me some Marshalls.......

how bout a 1987x reissue? do they have those? 50 watts, crankable, ripping classic tone....

Re: Recommend me some Marshalls.......

I say if you liked the DSL enough to ask this, then go with it. I have a DSL50 and it has been VERY versatile. I put a Boss Chorus in the loop and the cleans are amazing to me.

The only thing is that ssince the DSL only has one set of EQ and it is shared by both channels, I had to get an EQ that I use for the clean channel. It had too many highs for me when I had the gain channel set tthe way I wanted.

Iused the EQ for the clean channel instead of the Distortin causee it made almost NO noise in the clean channel.

I second the DSL50. I also own it and I really like it.

Cazmarzak, out of curiosity what are your settings for the distortion?

I have great disdain for the Mode 4. It sounds shyte.

I recommend a Plexi and grab a mesa v-twin for distortions if you like the mesa distortion so much...

Or a TSL60 or DSL50.

Re: Recommend me some Marshalls.......

I loved the DSL 50 when I played through one...I Liked the very fendery clean tones it produced also...Marshall has been really working on their clean tones over about the past 5 years or so...Guess they thought it would be nice to have great tones, instead of being just a one trick pony "gainy" amp...

I had a Mesa Tremoverb head for a short while, but I sold it because I got tired of the "buzzy" mosquito sounding preamp, plus the clean channel was sterile and horrible sounding....It's Marshalls and Fenders for me...I'd love an AC 30 Vox also, but at a later date...

That would be the 50 watt "Plexi " re-issue...:)

Again, when you say " crankable, ripping classic tone ".....YES !!!!
BUT,...at High Volume or attenuated. ( The Plexi isn't going to give you Loads of Distortion, not even cranked. You can get some very nice Power Tube Overdrive from it if you attenuate it...but not the HEAVY HEAVY Saturated Distortion of some of the newer amps out there).

When I think of " Plexi ", I think of Classic 70's Rock Tone's...EVH, AC/DC, etc...........

I think GuitarGuy is looking for a Master Volume amp with Loads of Distortion.

hahaha didn't you just switch from Strats to Pauls too? Interesting how tastes change...

Re: Recommend me some Marshalls.......

Brian,

My settings vary from time to time, and from rome to room but it's usulally something like this PResence 0-2, treble about 1 O'clock, Mids 12 or 1 O'clock, Bass 2 or 3 o'clock, all the little black buttons are out and I have the gain at about 2 or 3 o'clock, with the volume set at about 9 or 10 O'clock that drives the poser tubres a bit and anything past 3 o'clock on the gain is just overkill IMHO.

I wasn't recommending the Mode 4, I was simply making a suggestion....:)

It seems from GuitarGuy's original question that he is looking for MORE DISTORTION....at least that's how I perceived it. ( maybe I misunderstood his question ??? )

Never tried a Plexi with a v-twin...sounds interesting....:)

But, from my experience with the Plexi....I'm just not sure it is going to give GuitarGuy the overwhelming Distortion he is looking for. To me, the Plexi is more of a Classic sounding amp, a cleaner, more Harmonic sounding amp.

I'm a JCM 800 guy from way back, and I don't think the 800 is what he's after, either.

I guess my recommendation would be the same as some of the previous posters.....Stay with the DSL or Mesa.

Re: Recommend me some Marshalls.......

Whats the difference between the TSLs and the DSLs?

&

Whats the difference between the JCM900s, JCM800s, JCM2000s, etc? :smack: To many models :yell: .... :smack: :32: As I said before, I am looking for a Marshall that will give me the best of both worlds as far as clean and distortion.

Any info on those questions would be much appreciated. :)

Re: Recommend me some Marshalls.......

TSL's have a third channel which is called crunch. honestly to me it was just a waste. The 3 that I heard sounded different than the DSL, but you could theoretically take 2 DSL's and have them sound different too.

It may not be a big deal, but the TSL uses aweird footswitch that is pretty expensive to fix. I know a guy who had one and that's what he said. The DSL takes a regular 1\4 guitar jack.

Honestly , if you want the best of both worlds, go with a DSL. From what I know the 800's have awesome sound, but I don't know if they were know or even have a clean channel.
Again from what I've been told by people who have them, the JCM900's have a buzzy type distortion to them and again 'm not sure avbout a clean channel.

I think the buzziness has to do with Diodes in the circuit or something like that.

Someone else chim in here and correct me if I've got some wrong info.

What I can tell you though is that my DSL covered everything from Creed and Fuel, to Bad Company, and Rick Springfield, to Ozzy and Dio and Kiss.

The clean is aesome and if you really want the 3rd channel of the TSl, instead of spending a LOT more , you can get a Tubescreamer and use it with the clean channel.

Now why didn't I think of that.Perhaps I may send out my OS-2 for a mod in the near future

As for the DSL, I own a DSL50.Just do a search for "DSL" with the advanced search and select as threads started by "STRATDELUXER97"

Re: Recommend me some Marshalls.......

The JCM 800 2205 ( 50 watts ) , and 2210 ( 100 watts ) are split channel heads with reverb. ( They have a "clean" and a "Dirty" channel )

Again, the Overdrive on the 800 is more of a Classic Tone.....Not over the top Distortion. ( the 800 doesn't have a super heavy overdrive ).

I use the 2204 single channel 800's.
I set them up just on the edge of dirty ( so yes, I have a "clean" channel )...and push them with either a TS 808 or TS 9.

This probably isn't going to be a Heavy enough sound for a lot of people.....but it works for me.

Granted...I don't play as " Dirty" as most of Today's players.
I prefer a more Harmonic, Cleaner Overdrive.
