Recommend me some speakers!

I think i've decided what to do with my guitar amp GAS.

Since my friends have been talking me into saving some money for important stuff (education, drivers license, apartment rent), i don't think i'm gonna spend $3000 on a guitar amp.

Instead, i've decided to buy a Vox ToneLab SE, use my old Peavey head as an amp, and bulid myself a good 1x12" cab to go with it. I just need to decide what speaker i want.

I've had some very good experiences with Fane Studio speakers. They just sound very balanced, warm, and clean. Not clean to the point of paper\brittle mids and harsh treble, but just warm, sweet, and gooey. But then again, i don't think Fane Studio's are being made anymore, which leads me to find a different model, though high quality speaker.

What i'm NOT looking for, is a speaker that "farts" when playing loud clean notes, or turn to mush when playing several notes in a row under distortion. Several cabs i've tried had that problem, it just sounded like the speaker were about to blow when you hit a note hard, a muffled "thud" sound.

So, if you know of any good guitar, PA, even Hifi 12" speakers, please let me now. I'd greatly appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Re: Recommend me some speakers!

Erland, I'm a Celestion junkie so I'm going to recommend the Celestion G12H30. It's my favorite.

The Vintage 30 is also excellant and has a little bit louder and clearer tone but it is not as warm and full sounding as the G12H30.

If you're after warm, you might also like the Celestion Modern Lead 70. That one is to warm for me, but you might like it and it's still alot better sounding than 95% of the other speakers of other manufacturers.

Being in Europe, I'm going to guess you can get a good price on Celestions...otherwise I'd tell you about the new Eminence speakers that are made here in the USA.

By the way, had any whale blubber lately??? :)

Re: Recommend me some speakers!

Hi, Lew!

I appreciate your reply, but sadly enough i haven't eaten any whale lately. Though, if i get hold of some, i'll mail a pound of raw meat to you. It should be really ripe when you get it :D.

Well, being the researcher that i am, i sent a mail to Fane Acoustics asking them to recommend me a speaker. I've also listened to some soundclips found on a norwegian guitarist forum, where a guy made clips of celestions in the same amp. I didn't really like any of the tones i heard, but i guess that is because of the amp and guitar the guy recorded it with. The Vintage 30 seems too brigth, the G12T-75 too scooped, and the Greenback too boxy.

Again, i don't blame the speakers, rather i think the guy's guitar and amp cab brings out the worst in them.

If the Modern Lead 70 (which i didn't have a clip of) sounds really warm, it migth be something for me. I'm just afraid that it'll have that "wooly" tone.

Anyway, i'll try to listen to as many clips i can, and collect some more information.

Thanks for the advice!

Re: Recommend me some speakers!

And, i'm sorry to post again, but since i'm so tired i forgot something in the last one.

To better describe what i'm looking for in a speaker, i found a great way to describe it: it has to change my amp's tone in the same way that a Custom Custom would change a guitar's tone. It's gotta have thick, warm mids, a buttery bass, and a clear treble.

Sounds alot easier, doesn't it? :)
