Recommended PUPS for slide

I play most slide acoustic and occasionally on a 68 SG standard, but am considering seting up a strat or Tele for slide. What PUPS would be best?

Good question, and a Great Avatar!

I don't know the answer, but I guess I'm qualified to give you a bump! I'd imagine you want bass heavy HB's to take off some off that cutting top edge, but we'll see. It might help if you tell us what kind of music: delta blues?

Your right, I should have been a little more specific.
More Delta, Muddy, Elmore James, similar to some of the stuff EC did on from the Cradle. I know he used a Super 400 with P90's, but thats not exactly what I'm going for. I want a little more edge.

i really like qp's for slide either in a strat or in the tele bridge. my tele has a strat pup neck which is kinda like a ssl5 and that sounds good too.

antiquitys sound great for slide as well but dont have the same output.

what pup do you usually use for slide on the sg, neck?

The PUPS in the SG are stock. I find them to be a little hard to handle for slide. I'm thinking maybe a P90 stlyle or a antiquity single coil, gotta play around a little.

a qp in the neck sounds great for slide as does lil 59 in the middle. never tried one in the bridge with a slide but i imagine that id would work well

Do yo use a Glass or metal slide? I notice that a lot of strat slide
player use a metal slide? (i.e. Lowell George,Bonnie raitt) I guess
Cuz' it has a brighter sound?I use a glass bottle reguardless,Mainly because I like the smoother sound ,and it's easier to control. The Tele in my avatar works great for slide w/t
the humbucker in the neck and a Duncan 54' in the bridge. My main guitar I use for slide is a 67' melodymaker w/t a Duncan
Mini Humbucker.

i think you would be on the right track with the antiquites. I think an antiquity P90 would work the best for you, but i have no experience with this pickup, just the strat and the tele antiquites. If the P90 is anything like the character of the other single coils then it would be perfect.

one more thing that i think would be cool is a set of phat cats in that sg. those would be a great sound for slide, a vintage p90 sound without really modifying that old sg.

My slide of choice these days is a Mudlside, which is a ceramic slide. It has a feel like glass, but not as bright as glass. I don't really see much difference in electrics though. Once the volume gets up you really can't tell the difference. With acoustic instruments this type of slide works best for me. Heavier than glass, but not as heavy as metal. and very smooth.
I think the P90 might be the trick.
A friend of mine has a Tele with a very thin P90 in the neck, and a stock Tele in the bridge. This may be the combo. I will let you guys know. Thanks for all your input

Re: Recommended PUPS for slide

Actaully, I have had great luck with the newer Danelectro 3 pickup guitars (DC-3, U3) for a ratty slide tone. Great guitars for the $$$
However I hate the concentric volume/tone controls.....

Re: Recommended PUPS for slide

I play slide with my Sheraton in the middle position or neck, using the Phat Cats and it works great. I get a big, thick sustaining sound.

BTW, I use a heavy Dunlop brass slide. I used to use glass, but I break them a lot.

For Tele, I would go with a Phat Cat at the neck and a QP for Tele at the bridge.

Re: Recommended PUPS for slide

Derek Trucks sounds great playing slide on his Gibson SG with stock alnico 2 Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers. Those came in my '59 RI Les Paul tho I replaced them.

I think the alnico 2 Duncan Seth Lover humbucker sounds even better: fatter, richer, warmer.

So I'd say Alnico 2 Seth Lovers.

Re: Recommended PUPS for slide

I thought Seth's immediately when I read this... my brief experience with a Seth in the bridge of a Strat was very pleasing... warm yet crunchy tone ('pushed' setting on a rectoverb) I think it would be great for slide... especially with a Marshall or similar cranked a bit.

Re: Recommended PUPS for slide

For a Strat, I think the Antiquity Texas Hots would be a great choice for slide. Less glassy than stock and nice, thick, chunky mids. I'd want a pickup with less glass on top and more mids. Lew

Re: Recommended PUPS for slide

I've had great results on my Strat (strung with 0.11's) with a Lil' 59 in the bridge position, but I wired the first tone pot as a master tone control, and the second pot as a "twist-a-split" control for the bridge p/u to allow me to gradually go from humbucker to single coil. I use a 500k Ohm pot. I don't know if I truly completely ground out the second coil, but if that's a problem, you could probably get a "no load" pot.

Tone wise, it goes from pretty thin to a nice, thick sound.

Just sounds "great"? Ungodly, unbelievable, crap-your-pants tone is more like it. If you've ever seen him live, his tone will cut right through you!

(Sorry, I've been going through a HUGE Derek phase lately. :laugh2: )

Re: Recommended PUPS for slide

To me Derek's tone is a little on the bright side. I love Duane's and Warren's slide tones. Thicker, with the highs washed off.

I am using 498T/490R on a EPI SG that I set up for slide. And it sounds decent.
