Recording soon a few questions/comments needed

Reckless Abandon

New member
I have not recorded acoustic drums in about 4 years. Then I was limited in what I could do as far as micing now I have some good mics. Here is what I am am planning on doing. PLease offer comments if you have tried something that works better.

I can record 8 inputs/tracks at a time.

Track 1 sm57 on my g12h-30 speaker
Track 2 Bass direct
Track 3 Snare. Audio Technica 2 inches below snare pointing up at a 45 degree angle OR Facing the top head 2 inches off at a 45
Track 4 Kick Audio Technica 2 inches of the front head inside the drum off 2 inches to the side opposite snare
Track 5 Tom 1. 2 inches from the top angled
Track 6 Tom 2 2 inches from the top angled
Track 7/8 OVerheads about 3 feet higher than my drummer's head about 4 feet apart at a 45.

I may not use but one overhead and use another mic to capture the whole room for a "reverb" to mix in. or to mic my gt12-75 to make the guitar more complex.

thoughts??
thanks

One on the HI hat The other doing your cymbals[crash-ride-splash-other?]/ambience

Basing it on only 8 inputs.[2 for bass] so really 6,on what you listed.
To get the full kit ,you really need 8.

Maybe split one between the toms. All depends on what seperation you want.:blindfold

To mic a five piece kit, I like to use 8 tracks for drums. I also prefer to track separately or have guitar amps in separate rooms to avoid bleed. If this is only a demo that's not a big deal, but bleed can make a more important project much more difficult to mix. That being said, here is what I like to use:

track 1: AKG D-112 on the kick
track 2: SM-57 on the snare
track 3: Silver AKG C1000 on the hat
track 4: Sennheiser 421 on tom 1
track 5: 421 on tom 2
track 6: 421 on tom 3
tracks 7/8: AKG-414s as overheads

Black AKG C3000s also work good as overheads, and I'll use them if I don't have access to 414s.

Re: Recording soon a few questions/comments needed

I only have 8 tracks at a time, 6 for drums. All I have is 2 57's (one is for guitar), i kick mic, 3 tom/snare mics. I also have 3 cheapos I would have to use for something. We are recording the instruments live. I want as good of a sound as possible but I am selling this. I can isolate the guitar a bit so I am not worried too much abou that. I want a stereo sound on the drums. I want the rolls to "bounce around"

I appreciate everyones help. This would turn out much worse without help. I am a nocice on micing drums. I record guitars, bass, vocals, and electric drum all the time.

So you all are thinking more like this?
1 Guitar (Sm57)
2 Bass
3 hats
4 snare
5 toms
6 kick
7 overhead
8 overhead

I know this isn't really an answer but...

Do you have a way of running the guitar and/or bass direct to your monitor mix without actually recording it? This would allow you to use all 8 tracks for the drums and would also minimize bleed. You could then mic your amp and record your guitar / bass / vocal tracks as overdubs. This is how I usually end up doing serious projects in my home studio. Demos I just track live from the floor and overdub vocals.

I know it's more work and I know it isn't as fast as recording tracks live, but it will result in a better sounding final product and a better sounding recording usually is easier to sell.

I cannot do that. I wish I could but my gear is limited. Here is what I have decided. It is the best I can do.

Track 1 Guitar
Track 2 Bass
Track 3 snare
Track 4 Kick
Track 5 Hats
Track 6 tom
track 7 tom
track 8 crash

My drummer does not use his floor tom much anyway. We only have one crash and a ride. I will put them close together so the mic picks up both. I do not have a condensor so a cheap mic will have to do for the crash.

thanks guys I have done what oyu all have said as much as my equipment allows

Re: Recording soon a few questions/comments needed

I still don't get why you're recording all the instruments at once... just have the guitarist record scratch tracks and have the drummer play to those.

I am not selling this. It is a live recording. That is why I am recording it that way. Just a fun day that rarely happens in which I want to record.

Re: Recording soon a few questions/comments needed

That,s a fairly good setup. One mic is usually easier to share with the "high toms",as they quite often sit next to each other. That gives you another mic for "Cymbals" or whatever.

Record as much as you can live.Recorders don,t have opinions. It,s a great way to capture " the moment" and learn from what you can hear back.

Re: Recording soon a few questions/comments needed

I'll just put my 2 cents in. You can use two over head mics to capture the toms and cymbals. Mic the snare, hat and kick really well and you should be good.
