Recording with a mic

I'm trying to record with my new sm 57. I've never miked things on my own before. I use Garageband and my interface is a Toneport.

For some reason I am not getting a lot of volume from the mic - it sounds loud enough plugged into an amp, but not loud at all when using it to record, compared to the built in mic on my laptop. Any thoughts on why its so quiet?

Re: Recording with a mic

I used the SM57 through a Toneport a lot, are you going through the preamp models when you select mic as the input on the Toneport? You should be able to adjust the preamp models output. The API and Neve preamps are my favorite.

Re: Recording with a mic

It's weird, because plugging my guitar into the Toneport gives me normal volume recordings, but the mic into the same settings is barely audible. I have the volume up for the preamp and the line out volume up. Is there another output level to adjust?

I will give those preamps a shot.

Re: Recording with a mic

I'm not familiar with the toneport, but the output of a guitar should be way smaller than that of a mic. How loud is the amp set? It will take a bit of messing around with pre amp volumes, amp volumes and as super rad aid, there may be some boost functions for lower signals.

Re: Recording with a mic

The SM57 through the Toneport doesn't put out a super hot signal but it's more than enough when you use the preamps. This is digital recording and you can do things to boost the level after you record it, also it doesn't need to be super hot to begin with and still be usable. Adjust things on the mixing side.
