Red Devil Wiring help

I am trying to wire the red devil pickups to standard 5 way swith a push/pull volume, and 2 tone knobs. The issue is if I follow this 100% the neck pickup does not work. I didn't cut the neck pickup as the cable was the perfect length, so no cable breaks. The only way I get it to work is: Bare to push/pull ground, red/white lowest right tab, and green to the hot black on the selector switch. This gives me a weak out of phase sound with the push/pull down. Push/pull up I get full pick up and the other pickups split in their positions.

That diagram should work. So you just need to double-check your soldering and make sure nothing is touching where it shouldn't.

If you post clear pictures, we might be able to diagnose if there is a wiring issue. The good news is that the neck pickup does actually work, just not the way it is soldered in. That is fixable.

Re: Red Devil Wiring help

I soldered the neck pickup to the bridge pickups spot and it works. I've replaced the 5 way switch. I'm thinking the push/pull may have been over heated.

I got it. I had over heated the original push/pull. Also my neck pickups polarity was reversed. swapped the green and the black and works great. This wiring diagram leaves the neck off a tone control. Would I jump the neck hot to the middle hot on the 5 way selector? Or would this cut both pickups on at the same time?

I think you’re out of switch lugs. If you jumper the pickup side, those pickups will be on together. The other side is already being used for auto-splitting, so there’s nothing left to select the same tone for two different pickups, unless you change to super switch.

Yeah, I have a super switch on hand if needed. I'll probably remove the bridge from the bottom tone and put it on the middle. Move middle tone to neck.

So the pickup isn't backwards like I thought. It works reversed, but not the correct way. I also checked all grounds with a mulimeter all were good. 20190320_200239_HDR.jpg 20190320_200219_HDR.jpg 20190320_200255_HDR (1).jpg 20190320_200255_HDR (1).jpg

Re: Red Devil Wiring help

I don’t have enough experience with stacks, but my guess is that stack wiring (particularly how the middle pickup is handled) is not completely compatible with other single-size humbuckers. That kind of wiring on a regular Humbucker I would guess/expect to put the two coils out of phase with each other on the middle pickup alone.

Re: Red Devil Wiring help

the red devils are side by side single coil sized buckers like the lil 59 or hot rails, should work ok
