Refinishing a strat body

I guess I had the same idea as everybody else at the same time, I got bored and ended up refinishing a strat body I had sitting for a few years in Daphne Blue. Color mixing info on the can for those that want it exact since even fender doesn't get it right.












Still needs to be buffed out a little, the shop was dusty since it's winter. First attempt painting a guitar, wasn't too bad. Will be doing more in the future. And yeah the neck still needs work, it's not done and sat for about 4 years, just popped it back in to hang.

Needs a black guard with a straight humbucker rout and the blue knobs.

You were spraying an explosive mixture next to a open heat source? Glad you weren't blown to bits or burned alive. The fire marshall and OSHA would not approve your shop practices.

Yeah I'm just standing there blowing paint into the torpedo heater so it becomes dry spray before it lands on the guitar, sir. The torpedo heater was on for all of 60 seconds after I used spray bomb primer because I'm not going to use 2k on a guitar and wait 8 hours for it to dry, the bay door was open and it was 27 degrees outside and the drier in the back couldn't keep up with it. Could I have thrown it in a booth? yes, I could have. Do I feel like waiting all day after closing shop for the day when I've been at work since 6am sanding ****ty insurance jobs? No.

Looks nice. I learned from mine that getting paint in the neck pocket will make the neck sit higher.

That blue is wonderful! I don't think I'd trust my finishing skills to put something together that looks that good.

Two of my favorite Strat colors...Daphne Blue and Seafoam Green. Beautiful!

The comment about paint in the neck pocket is valid. I did that and had to scrape it all out. Now I tape it off.

Grabbed some hipshot closed gear locking tuners and a black trem to see how it looks, no earthly idea how to operate locking tuners but it needed tuners and the universal mounting plate won me over.

I think the last time this guitar was together was around july of 2014 or something, I had asked Ayrton how he got his necks amber/orange and failed miserably because I was dumb, then last year I tried to fix my **** up and effectively got the color I wanted but between the frets still looks awful and I could never figure out how to fix it without almost scalloping the neck, then I ended up trying to make the neck gloss with a spray mixture of 50/50 mineral spirits and tru-oil and it ran so I had to spray the entire neck down with even more mineral spirits and wipe it down before it dried. Ended up making it feel smooth as glass and nothing else about it really changed. So as soon as the weather breaks I guess I have to make good on my previous failures and make the neck bar smoke orange under gloss. (Disclaimer: I am a sick degenerate that likes gloss on the back of necks, sue me.)

That is what you get for listing to me. I think I have been pretty clear that I have no clue what I am doing.

Birchwood Casey has discontinued Tru Oil in the aerosol cans and has no plans to reintroduce them. Were you successful in spraying from an HVLP gun?

My ass you don't know what you're doing, you're one of the few people here that does sir.

And yeah it sprayed fairly well, I mixed it a bit light and had too much material though. I'd say if you give it a shot you might want to try it on some lightly sanded scrap for a few minutes to really dial it in, some guy redid a rifle stock with the same method and it was quite nice.

I was actually considering mixing the watco golden oak with the mixture to see if I could tint the tru oil, but never had the time to give it a shot and I was unsure if they would react strangely to one another.

I have some aniline dyes I want to experiment with, but I don’t know if I would mix Tru Oil with a natural oil.

Think I might just buff the neck out and leave it alone, it feels pretty nice the way it is, sorry for the pictures being sideways they were uploaded upright and it decided to do what it wanted.

Hipshot locking closed back tuners (I beat on it for 6 hours straight and I only had to tune it once after the strings stretched a bit.)
JB in the bridge
Bourns 500k volume and two 250k tones with a 0.068µF cap to choke the ear shattering highs of the stock single coils.
Wired to autosplit the JB on the bridge/middle position
Black hardware with GFS stainless steel saddles because my sweat devours chrome
And a GFS steel trem block because why not.

I personally love the way it looks aside from the dull patches on the neck.

I've never split a JB before and I'm actually pretty surprised with it, I didn't expect it to still have that much life to it.
