Relic-ing??

I've been thinking about doing the whole aging thing on my strat. I think it looks cool, and most importantly, it doesn't really cost anything. However, i've got 2 problems i'm not sure about...

1. Would a relic look good on a dark green sort of color?? Its not really one you would see relicked very often, like you would a color like olympic white or seafoam green.

and 2. I think the wood on the guitar (since its a squier) is poplar, and i don't know how that would look if i decided to get rid of the finish where the forearm contour is. I tried scraping away the finish in the spring cavity, first, but its pretty hard to tell.

What do you guys think?? Should i go for it??

Re: Relic-ing??

Well green isn't really a vintage color, so I think thats why you don't see it. Personally, I think if you just play it an awful lot it will eventually get relic'd the right way, but if you must do it, a Squier is the one to do it on.

Re: Relic-ing??

Hey jmv...long time no see. Squires are finished in poly, so you could play it forever and it would'nt relic like an old nitro Strat...unless you use it like Pete Townsend. A 'mild' relic is what I did to my poly'd Jimmive Vaughan and it has a nice vibe. When you sand down the typical wear areas, you could rub pencil lead on the bare wood and 'burnish' it with your dirty finger tip (dipped in dirt) to give it an old grey-brown tone. Or rub some Kiwi brown shoe polish on the wood and buff it off for some brown tones. Since it's poly, I carefully 'carve' out edge chips with an Xacto knife, hitting it with metal tools can cause too deep of a chip. Good luck and post pics if you do it. Thanks for the kudo's on the Telemodders site guys, we have fun there and you don't need a Tele to hang there BTW... :22:
JV Strat mild relic...

Re: Relic-ing??

I was hoping you'd chime in, butnut, i know you're real good at this kinda stuff.

What do you think about the poplar though?? Would it be okay if i do the pencil lead and dirt thing??

Re: Relic-ing??

Yeah, as long as you don't expose too much wood, kinda like the lower edge on my Strat or less should look fine.

Re: Relic-ing??

Hmph...

I just don't get the whole relic thing.

Kinda... ruins the fun of actually playing ONE GUITAR for 15 years till it gets worn the old fashioned way. But... that's just me, I guess.
