Remember that '77 JMP 2204 I was on about?

Recently I posted a thread about a 1977 Marshall JMP 2204 and 4x12 cab that my drummer's brother wants to sell. It's taken a while to organize, but I finally have said items in my possession on a trial basis. :D

Ryan (the drummer) brought them along to band practice last night. Holy crap, what a sound!! :smokin: I played a few numbers through the amp and 4x12 first, and the tone just bowled everyone over. Huge punch and depth, classic medium gain with bite and clarity, extremely touch sensitive. Boosted it with a Boss GE-7 and it screamed! I had been thinking that, whilst I definitely want the amp, I didn't really want the weight and bulk of a 4x12. So I tried playing the amp into my Jubilee 2x12. Still sounded good, but it lost a lot of the depth and the bottom end. It's been a long time since I played through a 4x12 - I'd forgotten what an earth-moving experience it can be! So now I'm thinking that maybe I do want the cab too. :scratchch

The amp is in pretty good condition considering it's nearly 30 years old. A couple of the corner protectors are missing, there are various small holes in the tolex and a couple of the knobs have lost their gold caps. All trivial stuff - structurally it's sound and (as far as I can tell so far) unmodded. One of the ECC83s says Mazda on it, the other two appear unbranded. Can't remember the brand name on the EL34s, but will check later.

The cab isn't a Marshall. It's unbranded and looks like it's custom or home built. Very solidly put together and well finished. Speakers are front loaded. I've no idea yet what they are, but I will be taking a look over the weekend. Whatever they are, they sound excellent.

So I now get to evaluate this stuff for the next week or so. I would be crazy not to buy it, especially as it looks like the price is going to be low. I cautiously thought I'd pitch in low for just the head, so I said £350 ($615). Then Ryan said "Supposing we say £400 ($703) for the amp and cab?" :boggled:

That price hasn't been finalized yet with his brother, but the jist of it is that he wants a quick hassle-free sale, but doesn't want to sell to a shop. I'll certainly pay more if he asks for it, hell I might even pay more if he doesn't ask for it! Looks like it's almost in the bag! :deal:

Pics later!

Don't feel bad, Jeff. I'm still a Damn Yankee in these parts....LOL. My in-laws got me sayin' "fixin' to" and "y'all" and stuff. That's OK though cause I got my daughter sayin' "GO YANKEES!" :laugh2:

Gotta love the terms from our friends across the pond.

I'd like some bangers n' mash with a pint 'o Murphy's please. :D

Re: Remember that '77 JMP 2204 I was on about?

That's a nice find. There is nothing like playing a head through a 4-12. I don't care about pushing a cab that's a tiny bit taller than a 2-12, just to have that bigger sound.....it's worth it.

And you can find Marshall parts easily, to fix the corners and knobs. Use some Murphy's Oil Soap on the tolex, then shine it up with lemon oil....it'll look like new again.

Great deal if it worked out ;)

Re: Remember that '77 JMP 2204 I was on about?

And those Mazda 12AX7's are not slouches. Some VERY FINE tubes came out of the Mazda plant in the 60's and 70's. Hell, it may be original.

Re: Remember that '77 JMP 2204 I was on about?

Checked the speakers in the cab tonight. They are Celestion G12-80s. Not something I've knowingly played before, but they were sounding pretty hot last night.

The EL34s say Teonex on them. Never heard of those before. Any thoughts, anyone?

I can't believe the deal will go through at £400. I'm ready to pay more. We'll see.

OK, I took a few pics tonight. Not the greatest lighting, but you get the idea...
