Removing tone pot = WOW!

Re: Removing tone pot = WOW!

My strat is wired with no tone control on the middle pickup. This gives me that crisp, raw sound in position three and brightens up notch positions two and four.

I like running the middle wide open too, otherwise on the neck/mid notch position I have two 250k tone controls bleeding off high end. It doesnt sound as good as having the middle with no pot to my ears.

Re: Removing tone pot = WOW!

It's all about loading (or not) the pickups. Conventional Strat wiring has 3 different pickup loadings..... 250K for the bridge (volume pot only), 125K (volume and tone pot in parallel), and 83.333 K (volume and 2 tone pots in parallel, which occurs on position 4 on stardard-wired Strats). Tooo much variation in the loadings.... better is the mod to have a tone pot on the neck and one on the bridge. Better still is a master tone control, and still better is master tone with the 'No-Load' feature. OR...no tone control at all, so all pickups are loaded by 250K, 500K or 1Meg, depending on pickup type/ volume pot value.

Re: Removing tone pot = WOW!

Nice pair of guits...simple finishes, pure rock n roll.

About the tone knob it really depends I guess. On a setup like yours I see the advantage, but on a SSS Strat with a vintage styled single at the bridge the tone knob wired to it is your best friend. Of course no loads are best of both worlds!

thanks. i really like to keep the guitars simple. not too much :bling: on my guitars. :)

Re: Removing tone pot = WOW!

Now I wanna remove my volume pots... they're always on ten anyway.

Re: Removing tone pot = WOW!

just a switch. is that even possible? can i disconnect my volume pots and just wire to a switch with the middle being dead? cuz i'll do it

Re: Removing tone pot = WOW!

Yeah. If you have a Gibson-style 3-way toggle, you'll need a different switch, though.

Re: Removing tone pot = WOW!

I removed my tone pot off my Music Man because I never used it and it was like hitting a hi-fi switch on my guitar. The bass got a tighter, extended range, and the highs gained clarity while not being strident, and the mids got a littel clearer and more articulate overall. That kind of tonal shift may or may not be good for you depending on the guitar and your needs but it was exactly what I needed for my sound and I love it!

Re: Removing tone pot = WOW!

I've got the bridge humbucker on my Strat with no tone pot. It added some extra crispness that balances out with the single coils just fine. Before, either the humbucker was too muddy or the singles were piercing high. The humbucker keeps a solid twang now, which is killer because it never sounds thin.

I think I'm gonna drop the Breed from my Ibanez into my Strat. Now that's gonna be a lovely combo.

Re: Removing tone pot = WOW!

I don't ever use the tone control on my bridge pickups, and use it a little in the neck for Clapton "woman" tone".

On all my guitars, I've replaced the tone controls with fender "No-load" pots.

On my EBMM Axis, the pickups are matched together so well that I don't need a tone control. I find this also happens if I use a Duncan JB/Jazz combo.

Before converting to EMG and Blackouts, I disconnected the tone control from the bridge of my Les Paul and noticed a huge difference.

Re: Removing tone pot = WOW!

very cool you guys-nice info. I have also wondered what this would be like on both my strats. Both are hum+hum. One with floyd and one with standard trem. After I played a Gretch Brian Setzer model I noticed how much I liked the bridge pickup sound. I couldnt quite tone down the neck though unless I went to the amp nobs so I worry about the neck Hums on both my strats but the bridge is very tempting, especially after reading your reviews
