I suggest this: screw the trem pivot screw in. It's got a groove where the trem plate contacts it, right? Now take a piece of wire, wrap it around the groove so that you have a bit left that you can grab with pliers. That's how I did it and it worked. I will try to make a picture to illustrate clearly what I mean.

Here's the pic. It's a bit crude - but hopefully it shows what I mean.

Re: Removing trem inserts/studs?

The way I do it involves a drill press, I find a faster with the same threads as the screw, cut the head of it off, thread the fabricated screw into the insert, put the guitar on the drill press table, chuck the screw into the drill press (leave yourself some slack to pull up on the handle), Clamp the guitar to the table, and pull up on the handle. Its much easier than it sounds! The reason I do it this, this way is to make sure the bushing comes out cleanly and perfectly staright! Reduces and possibly damage to the wood or finish on the guitar.

I use the same thread screw, put it in the bushing, lay a pc of wood on top of the guitar and use a claw hammer to pull the studs out.

This is the professional way to do it..... what also works very well if you don´t have access to a drill press are those rubber drill /screwdriver bit holders... thread the trem post through a nut and washer, then through said rubber holder, then simply tighten the post until the post and rubber extractor are in your hand (careful, they´ll be pretty warm).

Re: Removing trem inserts/studs?

I did it with the trem itself on my first Strat, pulled one of the inserts out a good 1/8". That's what warranty is for! :amish:

Re: Removing trem inserts/studs?

Well, on a lot of ´80s guitars with the old studs it will suffice to use the bar a bit and the whole trem will come right out studs, springs and all... most notably cheap basswood ones :laugh2:

Re: Removing trem inserts/studs?

I've taken them out with a puller before.... A can type thing with a treaded rod thru the middle.... a hock on one end to go over the posts and a wing nut on the other to tighten, which pulls up.... The local repair shop has one....

On a few guitars in my younger days i used a hammer's claw! No kidding! It worked on a few... then i marked a basswood body when i used too much force... so no more hammer!

I like that drill press idea! I'll try it the next time i need to remove the posts....

Re: Removing trem inserts/studs?

Thanks a lot guys for all the info!

Maybe this thread should go in the vault? just incase anybody else ever wants to try this on their guitar- the info would be saved for all to see.
