there are alot of excellent choices ... for that kind of music with that kind of guitar, i'd recommend a C5 in the bridge, a vintage rails in the middle, and a lil 59 in the neck ...
there are lots of good choices though, so stay tuned for otehr guys opionions

Well thanks for the compliments! I really like the OLP, it is a beautiful guitar and with the right set of p/u's it could be as good as a real Music Man.
I am familiar with the Little '59 and the Vintage Rails for the neck and middle single coils. However, I am not familiar with the C5 for the bridge humbucker (I don't see it listed on the SD product page).

Well thanks for the compliments! I really like the OLP, it is a beautiful guitar and with the right set of p/u's it could be as good as a real Music Man.

the custom 5 is "a '59 on steroids" ... it is essentially the same as a custom but with a alnico 5 magnet instead of ceramic .. i suggested it for the 'hard rock' component of your sons playing ... i have one in an H-S-H guitar with a Duckbucker (essentially a VR in a non-rails package) in the middle and 59 in the neck ... i think it blends well with these and gets solid hard rock and blues tones ... the C5 even splits nicely should that be of interest

Just upgraded my son's OLP MM4 last night... this is what I chose after much consideration of all the different options:
Bridge: DiMarzio Tone Zone (Black)
Neck: DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues (White)
Middle: DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Blues (White)
The sound that this $179 guitar makes now are nothing short of incredible. I am more then just a little impressed. They have a wide range of tones, clean to blues to heavy rock and they are dead quiet. The Virtual Vintage series are actually humbuckers in a single coil housing (they call them hum-cancelling). I was able to get all of these p/u's used and the cost was very reasonable... all 3 for $160(CDN) installed by a professional guitar tech (a friend of mine).
This axe just leap-frogged to second best sounding electric in my collection:
Electric's
2001 Ibanez Jem 7DBK (DiMarzio Breed's - HSH)
2003 OLP MM4 (p/u's listed above - SSH)
1994 Godin LG (Godin rail humbuckers - HH)
1972 Silvertone strat (original single coil p/u's - SSS)
Bass:
1979 Larivee 4-String Electric (EMG PJ split coil set)
Accoustic's:
1995 Godin 12-string Accousticaster (LR Baggs piezo system in harp cavity)
1980 Takamine EF-360 6-string accoustic w active p/u's (?brand?)

in these guitars i suggest a custom in the bridge and a vintage rail in the middle and a cool rail in the neck
or custom in the bridge and a duckbucker in the middle and a lil 59 neck
