Replacement PUPS for Epi/JoePass

Hey Folks,

I'm looking to switch the humbuckers on my Epiphone Joe Pass model (archtop jazz box)...

Which Duncan Humbuckers would you guys recommend?

Yes, I am looking for the warm jazz sound with a bit of edge and bite...

Thanks

Re: Replacement PUPS for Epi/JoePass

Go for a set of Seth Lovers or a set of the Duncan Jazz. The Seths would be my first choice...

The aniquity would be another good offering from Duncan. I just put a Fralin 7.5k humbucker in a handmade archtop and it sounds really good.

I had Phat Cats in mine. They sounded really good for pretty much any kind of music.

Did you change the pickups to something else ...if so, what did you put in after the Phat Cats?

or did you sell/trade the guitar?

I have the same make & model of guitar and am reading this post with interest.

Thanks

Re: Replacement PUPS for Epi/JoePass

I sold the guitar. It's a bit too big for me to play comfortably. I have the Cats now in my Sheraton.

Re: Replacement PUPS for Epi/JoePass

I work with Cris Mirabella. Some of you may have seen some of the guitars he builds posted here. IF not do a search and check them out. HE uses pretty exclusively the AlnicoII PUPs in his archtops. That being said if a customer were looking to a different sound he will change them, He has used Seths and Amtiquities also, but IMHO the AlnicoII is a really fine PUP for a Jazz box. They are warm and articulate. Exactly what you want from a Jazz box played thru a Tube Amp.

I have a MIJ 335 copy (Greco from 1981) and wondered about trying Phat Cats in it.
What are your comments re: Phat Cats in the Sheraton?

I play mainly blues through a Fend*r tube amp ('65 DRRI)

Sorry for taking your post on a bit of a detour....I'll stop after Benjy 26's response...a promise

Enjoy your Epi Joe Pass....huge tone!!
Did you put jazz style flatwound strings on your Epi?
I did and they are a bit too heavy guaged for my taste.

Good luck with the pickups.
Have you decided which ones you will be getting ?

Re: Replacement PUPS for Epi/JoePass

At around 8.1K, the Duncan 59B is very similar to the original alnico 5 humbucking pickup in Joe Pass's 60's Gibson ES-175. Back in those days Gibson would've used the same pickup for the neck or bridge position.

These days, most of like something a little weaker for the neck pickup.

Anyways: Seth Lovers, AIIPros, Jazz, 59's or Antiquitys would all be great choices.

I think Lew would echo your comments on the 7.5 Fralin. I absolutely love mine in my Flying "V"! I guess I was thinking that jamato wanted a more vintage Jazz sound, and for that an a2 humbucker would be the pickup to go to. Antiquities and the Seths would be the ones for that. I've only tried the Seths, so that would be my recommendation.
