Replacing a lil59- JB bj? Hot Rails? lil demon?

Hey guys,

I've had a lil59 in my strat for awhile...good bridge pickup, but I could use some more balls, fatness, etc. I'd like something a bit more modern that can really rock when I crank the gain on my Mesa. My strat has a maple neck, so it is pretty bright by nature, so I don't need a bright pup...

Thoughts?!?!

it sounds like you would like the hot rails, i have tried all three in a maple neck strat, personally i like the lil 59 best, (for blues rock that is) the hot rails is defintely a fatter sound though, i though the liljb seemed too lack sustain

Hot Rails... I had one on my Bridge once... really good pickup, but I wanted a full sized bucker then (dunno why exactly anymore ;) )
It's fat and "modern"... although it's not that crappy scooped stuff...

I say Hotrails, the pocket sized Invader :D

I'm not sure I want an Invader...maybe something more like a C5 or Custom or even a distortion, but not an Invader!! :)

Re: Replacing a lil59- JB bj? Hot Rails? lil demon?

The Hot Rails doesn't sound like an Invader. Also, Duncan lists the Hot Rails as having moderate output and the Little 59 as having hot output. So if that's right the Hot Rails wouldn't be hotter than the Little 59 anyway.

There may not be one hotter than the Little 59 if you can trust the Tone Chart.

Not that it's the final word or even a true indicator of output, but the DC Resistance of the Little 59 is rated at 17K and the Hot Rails 14.8K.

Thanks for the specs, Lew. I don't necessarily need something hotter, as I've got lots of gain in my amp, but I just need something fatter..bigger...ballsier? Am I limited in some way by using a single sized bucker rather than a fullsized?

i've got a lil screamin demon in my alder, maple/maple strat ATM. I don't find it too bright at all. the hi-fi qualities of the pickup make it handle gain really well too. I'm not sure it would be a massive change from your lil 59 though. but, since you want something fatter and ballsier, the hot rails may be a good choice since it has more mids.

The Little '59 is 11.78k. Where did 17k come from? Is the air getting a little thin where you are? :laugh2:
I know the Little '59 I have, which is an older model, is in the 11-12k range, maybe a little over 12k. It's plenty hot.

Lew I think you've looked at the tone chart wrong. The hot rails is one of the highest output pickups seymour makes.

Dimarzio Chopper or Pro Track.

I got a DiMarzio Chopper. Matches up well with single coils and has a more modern sound. I like it. Not a super high output bucker but enough. JB jr might be too bright especially in a strat.

How do the hot and cool rails compare? I definitely want something more than vintage, but I don't want something that is just super hot but sounds harsh or flat...

Re: Replacing a lil59- JB bj? Hot Rails? lil demon?

the hotrails will give you a fat sound. ive got it in my maple strat and really sounds thick and heavy, a bit muddy for me but with your mesa it will probably sound really good. i dont like the sound from it because my amp just gets muddy with it. but id reccomend it its a good sound. i cant really compare it with a cool rails bc i dont have any experience with that.

edit: its definitely got balls...
