Replacing an alnico 5 with a ceramic magnet tone

Has anyone taken an alnico 5 magnet out of a pickup and put a ceramic magnet instead? If so what does the tone sound like with a ceramic magnet instead of an alnico 5? Thanks

Depends on the coils you use with it too. Very generally ceramics have more power. The highs are extended and stiffer. The rest of the EQ is flatter compared to a A5 which has some big bumps in it.

You can look at the difference between an SH5 which is a ceramic and a Custom 5 which is A5. But without knowing what pickup you are putting it in its only a vague general idea.

I've just done this in my Perpetual Burn, the result is amazing!

Alnico 8 does a much better job than ceramic IMO.

Ceramic will make it obnoxious and ice picky. I would only recommend it if you truly hate your audience.

This is actually a good example of what ceramic magnet pickups sound like.

Actually, wasn't that back when Brendan Small was using EMGs still?

Ironically, he used a Burstbucker (1 + 2, I think) set in the Thunderhorse Explorer.

Ceramics do have more top end than an A5, and they're not as smooth up there. They're a little scooped sounding compared to A5, and the low end is tighter and responds faster. They're also louder.

I am gonna have to disagree–I think Ceramic magnets are awesome and not ice picky. :) My main guitar uses one and no complaints yet from the audience :kabong:

Generally speaking, I'm not really into ceramic pickups. I've heard people do amazing things with them, but they are not really for me. There is one exception, though: Distortion.

Re: Replacing an alnico 5 with a ceramic magnet tone

A magnet does not have its own tone. It has no tone at all without a coil(s), which also has no tone with a magnet.

There are A2 pickups that are bright and spanky and A5 pickups which are darker and gritty. It really depends on the coils.

Its funny though, I have not liked any pickups with A2s...would be interesting to try a magnet swap with a pickup I like such as the JB or Screamin Demon to see how the A2 reacts to something I already like...

Which A2 pickups have you tried?

I had a Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro Strat set and a Gibson Les Paul with Alnico II's (I believe is was a burstbucker 1 set) Just couldn't dial them in. The SD Alnico II Strat set I replaced with Fender Fat 50's and loved the tone, I didn't swap out the pickups in the Les Paul so I don't know the difference in swapping out pickups in that guitar. I had a Fender Strat with Alnico IIIs that sounded decent but I swapped them out for a hotter Alnico V's that sounded and responded better personally.

Those are the ones I can think of. My main pickups I use are the Dimebucker, Screamin Demon, Hot Rails, and JB.

Try a Custom Custom.
