Replacing Pickups in a PRS SE Custom (2007)

Hi all,

My first post to the forum, I've searched but references to this particular guitar are old and sparse so thought I would ask for updated information. I have a 2007 PRS SE Custom (22 frets if that matters). I really like the feel of the guitar but I'm not crazy about the tone. I have a buddy with a Gibson LP Custom (obviously a much higher end guitar, I think it's this model Gibson Custom 1960 Les Paul Figured Top Reissue Electric Guitar PG 129) and his sounds fantastic. I'm wondering if I can chase and achieve similar tone with a pickups upgrade. I ran the pickup recommendation tool and it suggested Alnico Pro II's or Seth Lover's when I plugged in a desire for a "warmer/fatter tone". I listened to the samples and they sound good but I have a new ear and I'm not sure they're really spot on or even close. Just different.

Any recommendations for a pickups upgrade in this guitar. Please note, if you think a pickups upgrade isn't worth it please say so too. I bought the thing used for $300. In some ways I think I'm crazy for sinking another $200 into it with a pickups upgrade. As my post probably makes clear, I'm a new player and I spend a good chunk of my time with an acoustic in my hands.

One final piece, and I know it's silly, but I really prefer the look of solid nickel humbuckers so if there's a good option that meets that aesthetic that would be a plus. I'm leaning towards Seymour Duncans obviously since I'm on their forum but I'm not married to that brand.

I have two modeling amps, a Champion 20 and a Line 6 Flextone III (2x12). I'm eyeing a step into the world of tubes though, probably Vox. As far as music I would say mostly classic rock/modern rock. I would like to learn a little blues and jazz because it sounds absolutely amazing. Nothing super heavy.

I think I mentioned in my earlier post, but I play a lot on the acoustic. Mainly because I'm not crazy about the tone I get from the electric TBH.

$300 is a good deal on that SE . Adding another $200 puts it just about fair market. I put SD JB (bridge) and a 59 (neck) in my SE. Mine cost $79 each new. Sound great IMO.

I know the SE is a little different construction wise than the upper models, but I know a lot of dudes in the Toronto jazz/blues/soul scene who have been repping the Suhr Thornbucker in their PRS guitars. Sweet, clear, not giant output, sound warm and smooth enough for jazz and jazz-blues, and clear enough to keep your notes distinctive as you roll on more gain for rock music. I've heard some really impressive tone from guys using that combo.

Seth Lovers sound great in one. Duncan 59 set is another great choice. Gibson 57 classics work well. The Dimarzio Air Zone and Humbucker from Hell sound good in one too, if you want more power. The Duncan Full Shred Neck matches the Air Zone Bridge well too. The Dimarzio Super Distortion and Super 2 is another great pair. The neck spot on those guitars can easily get muddy, making the bridge seem too bright and thin in comparison. You want a fat bridge humbucker that is not too bright and a neck that is not too fat and really bright. Of course, this is just my opinion, so take it for what its worth.

I've had pretty satisfied customers having an A4n/A8b-modded Vintage Blues set, aka '59 set in all the PRS SE 22-fretters I've serviced and/or modded.

If I had to choose for myself, I'd go with an A3n-modded Seth Lover set. (I play mainly Smooth Jazz and British blues)

The '59 set is easily found second-hand at very affordable prices practically everywhere in the world.

I have the transition set in mine. Had the 59n, C5 & Custom in there, didn't like those. Sh11 was good, the UOA5 mag in there was even better sounding. The 59/C hybrid might be a good choice too.

You won't get it to sound exactly like an les paul but you can beef up its voice with a pickup change, so good luck.

Here in the UK ( and I suspect its the same in the US) the PRS SE is a popular guitar to mod as it is well made , plays well and responds well to a pup upgrade. Unfortunately both new SE s and second hand ones seem to have gone up in price and bargains are becoming hard to find.

Most of my friends and acquaintances tend to be on a bit of a budget but UK made Iron Gear pups seem to work well in this guitar (and others) if you are looking for an excellent basic sound . They are substantially less expensive than SDs.

The web site prices include VAT at 20% which is deducted if shipped to US . Shipping costs are reasonable. Alternative covers are available. Check out specs and sound samples.

I have fitted Blues Engine /Dirty Torque , Blues Engine / Tesla Shark and have heard a set of Rolling Mills. I have also played a SE with a set of Tonerider Rock songs which sounded pretty good.

Just thought I would contribute some alternative suggestions.

While the hood is up consider also upgrading pots and fitting a push pull. Perhaps2.

I have four PRS guitars: two SE Singlecuts and two USA made Custom 22's.

Alnico 2 (PG's or Seths) sound fine in the singlecuts but lack something in the double cutaway CU22 body style.

Alnico 5 sounds much better in the CU22. Deeper. Livelier.

I have 59's modded with Roughcast A5 in mine. But the stock 59 sounded fine.

The 59's modded with Roughcast A5 sound better though. Fuller, more textured mids, which eliminates the "scooped" sound some complain about.

I play blues and jazzy blues. Love British blues tones, too.

These are now available aftermarket..Expensive, but they are amazing in any PRS.

Don't let the DCR fool you, they are not as hot as that would lead you to believe.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm leaning towards the Seth's or the 59/JB set. Still not sure if I'm ready to pull the trigger.

And down the rabbit hole we go This is my first mod. Where would I go to learn about upgrading these (and what type of pot should I get)? I'm completely clueless in this area.
