Rescued a 68 Bassman.... Vid clip and lots of noise....

Bullet Proof Toneologist

Got this yesterday, from a friend who said it just ain't working... After some cleaning, replacing a few tubes, and touching up a couple solder joints, this thing is rockin really nicely. Beautiful grunt and grind from the under-appreciated silverface side of things.... Still absurd bargains!!! Using Big Stan, my Jr build....

Big Stan's my hero.

I love love love my Bassman. 68 with the matching 2x12 (OS vertical one, not the puny horizontal) GOD it sounds huge..

Here's a crappy quality clip of what it sounds like with a Big Muff out in front:

Very nice! I've been looking for one of these locally. Just not sure what to pay and what year. I have been testing my buddies 68 and really like it, but the prices are all over the place. $500-$900.

Personally, I'd just get one without a Master Volume, or one of the early ones with a Master Volume and have it disconnected. Since you have to factor in the cost of getting any Bassman, unless the seller knows the last time it was completely serviced, it's not that big a deal to get a MV model. You definitely want to stay away from the UL models if you want it to sound like your friend's though.

Something like this would be a great deal if it were unmolested (not because the mods devalue the amp, it's pretty hard to devalue a SF Bassman) but because you never know who did them and how much it changes the tone for the worse. Sometimes it can be a pain to have those mods removed.)

Something like this would be an excellent deal.

Those amps are for posers, wannabes, transsexuals and hermaphrodites exclusively.

Man, that is extremely mean sounding!! Very nice. This is my 2nd 68 and I had a 66 as well. This one is the best sounding of the three, really enjoying it.

I saw an ebay listing that ended at 400.00. If you can go a bit ugly on the cosmetics, you can still really get a deal...

Which is why we love them so.

Thanks a bunch Kev - that means a lot coming from you. I love my Bassman - I've never found anything like it that I like nearly as much. I've wanted to get another one for a long time.

I used to pair my old 68 with a 1-18 Music Man cab, it was an obscene combo, had a big ol EV in it. A friend has it now...

Had a 68 Bassman... great amp... my favorite amp I have owned I think the Twin Reverb Custom 15 comes close (maybe tops it). Cool score!

Re: Rescued a 68 Bassman.... Vid clip and lots of noise....

Watched this on the big screen Kev. Sounded great. I have never quite understood the Silverface hate either..I mean, yes CBS really started to botch the guitars and quality went south on everything, but I never found the SF to sound bad..just different..than their predecessors. In the 1980s I had an old late 60s SF champ that was as cool as could be. In the 60s we saw drastic changes in all types of music and thus the equipment changed to meet those needs for your everyday consumer.

NICE RESCUE!

Really sounds great -especially when you gave Big Stan a little more volume!

Dibs when you get rid of it:naughty:

I held off on buying one for a few years, back in my early days of collecting. When I got one, it was a very clear reminder that I best use my ears instead of someones rehashed words... That is why I post clips, instead of typing about the sound of my amps... A lot of my amps have needed minor tweaks to get em to sing, 3 bone stock AB165 heads and I have changed nothing, other than maintenance required needs. I love em!
