Resonator guitars

Re: Resonator guitars

i play one a little, cos i used to play slide a lot. One of my students got a resonator, so it gave me an excuse to get one so i could show him stuff.
Why do you ask? Are you in the market?

Re: Resonator guitars

I love resonator guitars, they were what I began on.

I started playing on my father's '34 national duolian shortly after hearing Johnny Winter for the first time (Dallas). I have also played a triplate and a vintage 12 fret style o extensively.

For new production resonators, I think that the replicon is a great guitar, but somehow none of the nationa resophonic guitars have that rawness that the early ones seem to have. It may just be my imagination, but they all seem more refined. Still great instruments though.

Re: Resonator guitars

Anyone here play a resonator of any kind??

I have two. A brass body single cone biscuit style Dobro from the 60's. Not really sure of the model # & the year, but I had a Don Young spun cone put in & it improved the tone tremendously. I generally use this guitar in open D

I also have a Regal Dobro. Its a wood body with a spider bridge & it has a warm sweet tone. I like to use this in Open G or G minor. he only negative on this guitar is well two is it really isn't as loud as the other Dobro & the neck width is a little thin & it makes fingerpicking a bit more difficult. Other then that they are really solid guitars.

Re: Resonator guitars

Cool deal, I never seem them mentioned here (however this is a pickup forum for mostly electric players!) so I was curious.

In Janurary I got heavily into slide, mostly electric but have always been in love wiht the sound of resonator guitars...it comes from listening to Delta blues as well as my dad playing bluegrass Dobro but since I didn't play slide I saw no real point in owning one...

However now that I'm making a little headway with slide I see a point!

There is really no point to this thread, I'm just getting a reso head count!

Re: Resonator guitars

If you like electric reso sounds, and if you do not know about them yet, do look into Chris Whitley and Eric Sardinas.

Both very talented slide players.

Re: Resonator guitars

I know a little about both but I'm not really that into the electric reso stuff...I mean it's cool and all but to me those types of instruments just sound "right" when they are unplugged, have heavy strgins on them and are just played correctly.

Re: Resonator guitars

Whitley has some purely acoustic albums that are very good if you are into his kind of music.

For example, from "Dirt Floor"

Re: Resonator guitars

i was just playing a '31 national duolian this weekend. round neck but with a high nut so only lapstyle slide. such a cool sound!

i dont own one anymore but id like to get another one. a guy i play with has a national that is great. he had a firebird pup installed a few years back which i wasnt thrilled about but it sounds great thru an amp and didnt really change the tone unplugged much at all.

Re: Resonator guitars

I'm looking for a way to amplify my National that is non-invasive and reversible. I'm thinking about ordering one of these pickups for it from National. It's held on by double stick tape.

Re: Resonator guitars

I have an Epi Biscuit that is surprisingly good. VERY loud unplugged, even for a reso. I once had a friend come over while I was picking away; he said he could hear me playing it from down the street. It's bright without being overly so. It's a National style (biscuit bridge screwed to the centre of the cone). I keep it tuned to open G. Like any reso it loves the slide, but I play it just as much without as with.

The Biscuit isn't made any more. Gibson decided to make their budget resonators under the Dobro brand, and when they did this they switched to a spider bridge. I personally prefer the biscuit resos but they're all good.

I've played quite a few resonators, and someday I hope to own a really nice one. The Paul Beard stuff is outstanding.

Your first step is to choose which bridge style you want: biscuit, spider, or tricone. Do you have any idea yet?

Re: Resonator guitars

ive put paul beard assemblys in a few crappy fenders and it made a big difference.

Re: Resonator guitars

I've been looking to get a resonator for quite a while now. I play slide mostly on a Goya acoustic that my puppy a few years ago snapped the headstock off of. After that, could never get it to set back up quite right so I just kept the action high and play slide on it.

I also have a beater electric (copy of a Gretsch TK-300) that I play slide on but would love to get that authentic Reso sound.
