Alnico 6/8
I bought this strat plus deluxe back when it was made in 1991 by saving up dollars from my first professional gigs. Love it to bits. Played it to death.
Sadly i broke the truss rod a few years back, then had it replaced but the neck was never the same, nor was i able to get enough tension on it. The fingerboard had become uneven, the frets had no meat left in them. It was no longer good to play.
Anyway, i found a strat plus deluxe neck from the same era on ebay so i snapped it up. Slapped the original tunes back in, screwed it onto the body and voila! New guitar!
From top to bottom:
Fender Schaller locking tuners.
Hand cut bone nut (replaced the roller)
SSL1, SSL1, SSL5
Along with the neck i splashed out on a solid steel block bridge from gotoh. It is the same one that suhr guitars use. Just dropped it in with no need to do any mods.
Snappier tone now that is has maple rather than rosewood. Still a deep warm axe with sustain for days. It has always been a great sounding strat.
I think over the years the only things left original are the body, the tuners and the jack plug (but I'm not sure about the jack plug lol). Definitely a players axe and not a museum piece but I am pretty sure 1991 strats are not exactly collectable!
Pretty stoked with the result. Can't wait to take it on the road next week.
