Reverb a must for cleans?...

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

I gotta have either reverb or slapback. It's a must....but not over-done.

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

Nope.

The best clean sound I have ever gotten is Les Paul Jr (P90) -> Fender '59 Bassman LTD (equipped with Weber speakers). It actually sort of stunned me on stage when I started playing a song clean and I was like, "WOW! I sound AMAZEBALLS!"

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

yeah a little bit, just to give the sound some room to breathe and sound fuller.

of course, if you're playing in a room that has plenty of natural reverb, then leave it off cuz it could end up being too much.

I prefer a wee bit of delay though.

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

Reverb is precisely as essential or as verboten as you think it is.

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

Reverb is non-essential, in fact you should NEVER EVER use reverb. Scientific FACT! If you disagree then you're probably a tone serf and enjoy listening to Bang Tango.

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

I generally like a little reverb on cleans BUT you really have to take the room into consideration. Some rooms have a ton of reverb, many Churches for example, but other rooms too....so it all depends.

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

I always have a hint of Spring reverb on my amps even with heavy downtuned fuzz and distortion stuff. It adds some depth I think.

don't get me wrong I also love cranking up a dry amp too.

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

One thing I can definitely add.

If you are into any kind of reverb AT ALL...even just a little.

The Strymon Big Sky is the last reverb pedal you need to buy. I have Fender reverbs, I have the Soldano Space Box, I have tube reverb units, I have reverb pedals, I have great amp reverb....this slaughters all of them.

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

Dry. Reverb removes punch. To me reverb is a specialty effect for things like surf, spaghetti western, noir/dark & lonesome style songs. While many will deem it sacrilege, I think reverb isn't needed for the blues either. It can be used to add some moodiness in a slower melancholy song, but you don't need a dripping Fender on every single track.

Sorry, that sounded like a bit of a rant, huh? Try as I may, I never really get along with reverb very long. I ended up selling all of my reverb equipped amps and my stand-alone tube reverb unit because I simply wasn't using them.

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

True Story: Before I read this thread yesterday I didn't give to much of a **** to care about dry clean and then I started adding some reverb now my reverb is always one whether it be 1 -10 its never at 0

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

I don't use reverb at all. Though that probably has something to do with my main amp not having it built in, and I don't have any pedal for it. Though I find a lot of people get carried away with reverb and the sound gets lost. It can sound great as long as the notion of "less is more" is followed.

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

I like a little reverb but not too much. On Fender amps I usually set the reverb at about 3 any more then that I find it gets in the way of the natural ring of the guitar

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

I LOVE reverb, especially the Eterna...don't let my wife's iphone4 recording dissuade you, this sounds much better in person.

Re: Reverb a must for cleans?...

Clean players (or partially clean players)... I just wondered if Reverb was a must for you with cleans (whether spring reverb or pedal reverb) or if you are ok just playing dry? Personally, I absolutely can't stand dry cleans as it sounds so lifeless and dull. Needless to say reverb is a must for me... How about you?

Not a must for me, but I like it.
