Reverb Pedal?

I'm playing a Strat with Antiquity IIs in the neck middle with a TX Hot in the bridge through a Mesa Boogie MK III red stripe. I love the tone but, for whatever reason, it does not have reverb. I wanted to get some input on what would be the best reverb pedal to buy. I play blues and classic rock and believe simpler is better when it comes to gear. I've taken a long hiatus from playing regularly and have been out of the loop gear wise. What should I look at in terms of a simple, pure sounding, reverb unit?

Re: Reverb Pedal?

Welcome to the forum Otis8.

I have the Line6 Verbzilla and am very happy with it. It is versatile and has a warm authentic sound. There are way more models and settings than I will ever use but the obvious basic ones (63 Spring, Spring, Plate, Hall) sound great. It has a good slapback echo effect too.

Re: Reverb Pedal?

Ditto on the Verbzilla. I have one and feel it's the best reverb pedal or outboard reverb unit I've ever owned or used. I even like it better than the stand alone Fender tube units I've owned. Highly recommended.

Re: Reverb Pedal?

Verbzilla wins. I never turn mine off, good for subtle tones that smooth out ure sound in a rele nice way, good for crazy stuff too. I run mine in stereo with my Tweed Twin and Princeton Reverb clone, it's sick.

Re: Reverb Pedal?

I have a Verbzilla as well and use it with my komet. It works just the way you need it. But IMHO it does not compare to real spring reverb. It sounds very good, but when I compare it to my Fenders or my Bogner, the real spring wins out every time.

So if you really want the best you can get, shop around for a used Fender Reverb tank, even the Reissues are great. If your playing at home that's the way I would go, for Gigging. The Verbzilla is a lot morre portable.

OH........... Welcome to the Forum.... hang out, there are some really cool guys & a lot of knowledgeable people.

Re: Reverb Pedal?

Simple - EH Holy Grail (warm, organic, lively, gritty - in a good way. Mmmm)
Slightly Less Simple (but much more flexible) - Holy Grail Plus
Or - Verbzilla (for a lot of bells/whistles)

Re: Reverb Pedal?

I think the Verbzilla sounds almost as good as the built in spring reverb in my blackface Fenders and better than the stand alone Fender spring reverb unit because it doesn't weaken the signal of my guitar the way the stand alone unit does. I've never plugged into an EH Holy Grail but it gets good reviews. Lew

Re: Reverb Pedal?

Thanks so much for the responses- very cool.

I listened to audio clips of the Holy Grail and the Verbzilla and liked both, although I'm leaning a little more towards the Grail. It sounds a little more natural. I don't need all the amenities that the Zilla has. In fact, I was going to run whatever reverb I bought through the effects loop and just leave it in the back of my Boogie.

Has anyone A/B'd them?

Thanks again for your responses. There are a lot of knowledgeable cats on this board. I lurked for a few weeks getting info on pickups and used the info on these boards to buy the Antiquity IIs. And I couldn't be happier with them, wow what great sounding PUs!

HA! Take that Verbzilla mafia!!!!!!!

But honestly, any discussion about verb pedals eventually comes down to these two. And as much of an advocate of the Grail as I am, I'm getting close to getting a Verbzilla too. They both have some great sounds - just different.

If I wanted to do an awesome VH, I'd be running the plate verb on a Zilla. for single knob spring repro, I'd go grail.

really can't lose either way.

Re: Reverb Pedal?

Verbzilla would be my pick because its got a wider range of settings so you can find one that you really like. I had the grail as well and its great too, but its only one sound, that if you love it works great but its not versatile

Verbzilla gives you choices so one that while one person might like the 63 spring, another might like the vintage plate.

Its really rather set and forget after you pick a sound you like. I never messed with mine much after picking a sound.

WELCOME TO THE DUNCAN FORUMS !!!

When it comes to reverb, there is two units that i would spend my money on . . .

. . . it just depends how deep your pockets is !

* EHX Holy Grail PLUS

. . . and/or . . .

* Fender tube driven Reveb Unit ($600.00)

My 2cents

Re: Reverb Pedal?

Another vote for the Verbzilla. I tried the Holy Grail, and though it sounds nice it wasn't the reverb sound I was looking for. I want studio-quality hall reverb, and the only way to get that in a pedal is the Verbzilla. It's the best thing Line 6 makes IMO.

I must be the only guitarist who thinks this, but spring reverb sounds cheesy and fake to me. Most guitarists have forgotten that "real" reverb doesn't come from a spring tank - it comes from a room. Digital reverb sounds a lot closer to "real" reverb than a spring tank ever will.

Re: Reverb Pedal?

Don't get anything digital. For 50 bucks or so you can pick up something Analog and more natural sounding.
I dont own anything digital. Digital sucks.

Analog reverb pedals ???

Ive seen some crappy pedals that have a small actual spring in them that sound horrible and still over $150 or so, but an analog reverb I've never seen.

Short of a spring, plate or natural room acoustics they are all going to be digital as far as I've seen.

What are you going to do in Feb when they stop broadcasting analog tv signals Jer ? Stop watching ? lol

Re: Reverb Pedal?

The DigiTech DigiVerb is my choice. It has a bunch of different settings, but what I really like is how it sounds on really low settings. And for strange sounds, the Reverse setting maxed out is pretty wild.

Re: Reverb Pedal?

well then forget about reverb. I refuse to listen to digital. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. Don't worry to much. I'm nobody. But yeah, I mean it. I don't do digital. I actually thought there were analog reverb pedals.
Best just spend the money and get a reissue Fender reverb unit i guess.Buy a **** amp with a spring reverb. Surely you have one of those?

I take an amp in the bathroom and jam while on the toilet. Best natural 'verb ever lol

Seriously though, digital reverb is pretty darn good if its high quality 24khz Lexicon quality stuff with really good algorhythms and such.

Spring sounds good for some stuff, but I personally love the sound of a nice big plate reverb like Hendrix and the Beatles etc used.

Short of having a room for a big EMT plate and lord knows how much they cost, digital is the only solution to that sound.

I'd guess that 99% or higher albums these days are using digital reverbs in post production

Like what?

For 3-5 bills you can find a Peavey Valverb on the bay (which is the holy-of-holies of reverb with a tube, IMO), or the previously mentioned 6 hunnerd Fender tank - what else you thinking of?
