Reverb Ridiculousness

Re: Reverb Ridiculousness

It's not Reverb - it's everywhere. Not like you can snag one for $200 on eBay or at a guitar show either.

Re: Reverb Ridiculousness

PAFs have been in that price range for awhile. If you hadn't heard, there's an entire industry based on chasing that sound, and the guitars that came stock with those fetch up to a quarter million.

Re: Reverb Ridiculousness

I hear what you guys are saying and I do realize that “ Vintage” is hot right now.
But I’ll never be convinced that these are worth 3K.
That almost what a new Friedman amp costs.
Besides, we have had several threads/discussions about what exactly PAF tone is...the conclusion is that nobody really knows. There were way too many inconsistencies in the construction back then.
If somebody wants to buy these for the nostalgia factor then by all means, go for it.
But there are a ton of makers that can make a better pickup for far less money.
Just my opinion though.

Re: Reverb Ridiculousness

One thing that caught me is that they are in horrible condition. Unless you are looking at restoring an original 50s Les Paul, there is no point to these.

Re: Reverb Ridiculousness

My set of Custom Buckers, and my neck un-potted Seth Lover are both close enough to PAF tone that they could be pretty convincingly heard as what where intended to sound like with the right amp.

As a player that price seems crazy.

Real PAF's are a piece of tone history though, like having an engine out of a Hemi 'Cuda or a Bat that Babe Ruth used. They are something real you can use, the price won't go down, and you don't have to pay property taxes on them. If you have the $ and like guitar stuff why not? I've only been able to play one real set of PAF's, that set sounded effin amazing though. Most modern guys would not have loved them, but for about 5 minutes that Burst, an early Plexi, and my hands were able to sound exactly like Billy Gibbon's live work on Fandango. After playing that rig, I can understand why guys would go crazy chasing the stuff if they had the scratch.

Re: Reverb Ridiculousness

Capitalism. Love it - live it.

Something like this would be an investment (well, a "playable" investment).

Sink your $$$ into it, and it'll pretty much hold its value or go higher.

Re: Reverb Ridiculousness

My ‘62 LPSG has them, and I’d never try to argue they’re worth that. I’d be much happier with a pair of $3k guitars and a killer set of custom pickups for the ‘62.

Re: Reverb Ridiculousness

They became pricey in the first place because of their tone. But continued that way due to scarcity and increased demand.

And whilst PAFs are all a bit different, it is wrong to say that they don't have a 'tone' to them. From a well known PAF clone winder and book writer, I got "full without congestion, articulate without harshness, bite without shrillness"

But price and 'worth it' is a highly personal association.

Try 2 mil.....if its Greeny. Who knows what Pearly or Page #1 would fetch but maybe more.

Re: Reverb Ridiculousness

That seems a bit higher than they were going for in their prime about 10 years ago. I think that's about double what a set would go for today. I'd wager he won't sell it anywhere near that price, but I guess we'll see how bad Bonamassa needs a spare LOL.

Re: Reverb Ridiculousness

I suspect that Page's #1 will sell for more than we're even dreaming. How many LP's did that guitar sell, how many guys sling their guitar low and start their own rock bands b/c of how Jimmy played? Plus Joe Walsh also owned it, out of control rock-n-roll royalty lineage.

This is a drum song, but listen to that effin guitar tone.

Re: Reverb Ridiculousness

It's hard to say if Pearly or Greenie will go for the most. I never even heard a ballpark number for what Kirk paid for Greenie, there was a hint of him getting a good deal on it b/c it was implied that the seller wanted it to be stage played again by someone who matters as a guitar player, 2 million is probably too high for even Metallica money as he already had Burst's.

Greenie is the king of tone for the three though. This is my favorite LP tone ever.

Skip to 5 min in for the goods if you won't watch it all.

Wow...that was amazing! Thanks for posting that. Every time I listen to Gary I’m completely blown away. He is so powerful.
I really need to start listening to more of his stuff.

I actually had a mini-moment when Kirk pulled it out for an extended solo and I realized I was listening to one of the most iconic guitars ever. Man, does it sound good.

I agree with the tone, but Gary was always my favorite, IMO, the best ever
