Reverse Polarity Pickups...

I've got a dual humbucker Fender guitar that they describe in their own words as follows...

"The Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates Plus and '59 Reverse Polarity humbuckers at the bridge and neck respectively create a fat tone with tons of bite"

I don't know much about the technical side of things, so I was just wondering if this is this a unique feature? Are reverse polarity pickups special or rare? Or is this just unnecessary marketing jargon?

Re: Reverse Polarity Pickups...

neither. you can make any two pups out of phase so they arent really rare and it isnt really bs either.

the reason they do that is so when you use the split coil options you can get humcancelling. if you had both buckers on at the same time it would sound weird but i dont think the stock wiring gives you that option.

Re: Reverse Polarity Pickups...

so will can i get the humbucking effect using two pickups just by reversing where the leads are soldered on one of the pickups ?

Re: Reverse Polarity Pickups...

you get a humcancelling effect by having two coils that are reverse wound and reverse polarity from each other. as long as the coils are opposite magnetic polarity you can usually swap the hot and ground wires around to make it work

Re: Reverse Polarity Pickups...

Your Fender guitar is either a Big Apple or Double Fat Stratocaster. The RP/RW neck pickup is necessary so that the "inside coils" selection on the five way switch remains hum-cancelling.

Re: Reverse Polarity Pickups...

prs does something similar to get all the spit coil options to be humcancelling

will turning a p90 upside down achieve this ?

here is my situation.

single coil in neck: can only go in one direction because of the route.

P90 (humbucker sized) in btidge: can be put either diection.

will flippting the P90 and soldering a different lead achieve humbucking in the center switch position ?

thanks.

Re: Reverse Polarity Pickups...

no, turning a pup wont do a thing. you would have to flip the magnet or flip hot and ground wires depending.

what pups are we talking about here?

what pups are we talking about here?

a Mighty Mite Strat single coil (from a MM pre-wired pickguard)
and
a Mean 90.

thanks.

Re: Reverse Polarity Pickups...

im assuming that the two pups are in phase but dont cancel hum right?

what you need to do is flip the magnets in the mean 90 and flip the hot and ground wire on ONE pup. if the mean 90 has a braided shield then flip the wires on the single coil.

Re: Reverse Polarity Pickups...

I think that the FMT HH Tele is like that...I don't think that the Double Fat's and Big Apple's are (the FMT has a three way switch...the others have a five way...if that matters). I could be wrong.

thank you so much. i´m not ready to implement yet, i´ḿ just getting it straight in my mind. i´ll probably ask again when i get ready to implement.

i used to understand series / parallel / in phase / out of phase / all of that, but never really had to deal with it - as i´m a simple man - one volume one tone....but in this case i think i´ll go for the humbucking mode in center with cut off in one of the positions of a 5 way switch. once i get the nerve to go inside and flip the Mean 90.

and by flip, you do mean top to bottom, correct ?

Re: Reverse Polarity Pickups...

The Tele FMT uses the RP pickup to achieve noise canceling when the coils are split and the pickup selector is in the middle(both pickups on)position.
