reversing the wires on north and south polarity pickups?

I have a surfers custom bridge and a regular texas hot comming in. i want to use the texas hot in the neck since its not rw/rp. i have read and heard that the pickups will be out of phase. i have also read about swapping some wires around to fix it. my question is how do i swap the wires? do i just hook them up different at the switch or do i have to do something different at the pickup? also what would be a good pickup to use in the middle of those 2. i was looking at the twang banger but am not sure.

i am pretty sure that simply reversing the wires will not do what you need because it will only account for the electrical wind direction, but not the rod magnet polarity

Hey T4D; If he reverses the wires, it should achieve what he needs. You can reverse the phase of a pup by reversing the wires, reversing the wind direction, or flipping the magnet. Do any odd number of those, and you reverse the phase. Do an even number, and you're right back where you started. So a RW/RP pup will be in-phase with others.

Man-in-moon; If you have a humbucker, reverse the green and black. If its a single, reverse white and black. That should do it. (I think there was one pup that was red and white.) Either way, just reverse the hot and ground wires.

You will want to reverse the black and white leads of the Ant Surfer bridge pickup but wire the Texas Hots normally. And you will probably want to reverse the positions of the neck and middle Texas Hots and put the middle pickup in the neck position. When placed face to face, you want the magnets of the neck and bridge pickups to repel each other...not be attracted to each other.

When you check them, do not force them together for a long time...just do a very quick check to see if they repel or attract.

my bad .. i apoogize ..

was i thinking about hum cancelling where you need both wind and magnet to cancel? .. if he follows your advice will they be in phase but still not cancel hum?

Now that I reread the question, I think you were right. I wasn't thinking about noise cancelling - just phase. I'm sure he wanted the hum-free answer. :smack:

If you do this, you should have humcancelling when the middle pickup is combined with the neck or bridge. Lew

thanks for all the help guys. it doesnt seem to be a hard fix. i don't have a middle pickup yet. i am trying to decide what i want to try there. so basicaly what your saying to do is just swap the ground and hot wire around. then use the texas hot in the middle instead of the neck. in that case what would be a good neck pickup to use with them? and will it have to be rw/rp? i have to make it complicated haha. i got the surfer and texas hot in a trade. and i have never liked matching pickup sets for some reason. would a twangbanger rw/rp work in the neck or would i just need to get a regular one. thats not rw/rp.
