Review of STRATDELUXER97's BOSS DS-1 MOD!

Wow...I don't know quite what to say. This thing sounds sooo much better than the stock DS-1, it's a crime...really...those BOSS guys should be arrested for not bringing out the magic that is inside this pedal. :laugh2: Also, I hate to say it, since he's such a nice guy...but...BETTER THAN KEELEY! :) I tried the pedal with my friend's rig (slightly modded 83 JCM 800), and the tone this little pedal put out was almost better than plugging straight into the amp! The JCM's no slouch, though. The modded DS-1 just really compliments it nicely. Thank you STRATDELUXER97 for bringing good tone into my life.

Re: Review of STRATDELUXER97's BOSS DS-1 MOD!

That does it!! I'm gonna have to buy a DS-1, get it modded, and see what all the fuss is about!!

Re: Review of STRATDELUXER97's BOSS DS-1 MOD!

yeah, it's hard for me to play one of my teles without one of my "stratdeluxer" DS-1s! :)

just plain ol' fat & juicy!

Re: Review of STRATDELUXER97's BOSS DS-1 MOD!

I'm very curious to see how it plays against my Fat Pipe Pro and Full-Drive 2

Re: Review of STRATDELUXER97's BOSS DS-1 MOD!

I agree. I like the DS-1 John modded better than the Keely Seeing I Modded DS-1 I had. John's DS-1 mod seems to be more sensitive to changes in my picking angle and attack...I can squeeze the notes out and get better pinch harmonics from the one John modded. And my TS-9's John modded for me both sound better than my TS-808! Lew

Re: Review of STRATDELUXER97's BOSS DS-1 MOD!

This forum is like beans for G.A.S. !!! I keep thinking about that modded 808 Reissue 59Paul keeps raving about. Doesn't Keeley buy up a bunch of Boss pedals as cheap as he can, then mod them, and sell them? I don't know about the legalities, but it seems to me that StratDeluxer97 could start doing that to avoid people having to ship him their pedals. Just an idea.

Also, Fender started doing relics at the time when the vintage guitar craze was at a high point. It seems like Boss would simply steal the basis of all these mods and start selling them that way. They probably wouldn't pay for the mod schematic, because afterall, it's their product!

Re: Review of STRATDELUXER97's BOSS DS-1 MOD!

that's it...

i gotta get either a tubescreamer or ds-1 soon and have it "stratdeluxed" too!!!!!!

this stuff is killing me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :smack: :yell: :smack: :yell:

Re: Review of STRATDELUXER97's BOSS DS-1 MOD!

I too had John mod a DS-1 for me. I HATE stock DS-1's, and I'll admit to it that I bought one and sent it to him almost as a test to see just how much modding a pedal can improve the sound. Let me tell you... it can improve a LOT. If you haven't bought a DS-1 and sent it to John, well what are you waiting for? John is an awesome guy too... even if he doesn't like Pink Strats! :laugh2:

I suppose I can break my silence - but I have asked John to buy a TS-9 and to do the mod and send it to me. He has very kindly done so and its on it way to merry old England. From what John has described to me it is one helluva pedal and I am going to put it up against my other tube screamer and will report back on the findings. My feeling is that its going to be a killer and I know some guys in the UK who are going to love it, but they are not getting their hands (or feet) on it!!

All I can say is that John is a great person and friend. For those who are thinking about sending their pedal or for him to purchase the pedal and do the mod - JFDI. :)

Oh phenomenal MRID....See these types of posts make my whole day! Gosh I Love when you guys take the time to tell me this! :cool3: Keeley's modded DS1 didn't impress me...A musician buddy has one of his SEM and Ultra mod...I'm a guitar player with really good ears for tone and have my own ideas on what works...Keeley is not really a guitar player and does things from an engineers side of things with musicians around him...It makes a difference having experienced ears doing the mods...Not to blow my own horn, but it's just the truth...Glad you like the pedal buddy...Sure couldn't beat the price either! LOL I also need to tell you all that Robert Keeley is a heckuva nice guy and I'm in no way saying I dislike what he's done..I Just like my DS1s better is all... :smack:

I've had a DS-1, an SD-1, and an SM-9 all modded by Stratdeluxer. He hasn't let me down yet, awesome guy.

I don't know about any legal issues, but I know I don't want to stock a bunch of pedals here at home...It's a fun hobby, but for me,it could just as well all end tomorrow also...I do the nice thing for all my forum buddies until something or someone ruins it...Hopefully not and I'm only talking hypothetical stuff....It is better just the way it is at this point...Thanks for caring though..

Norman let the cat outta the bag! LOL...Norman...You're a great guy and a welcome friend also and as I said,I really will go out of my way for a friend..I don't feel that I really went outta my way though, and it was no big deal..I'd do it again in a hurry if need be...

Your modded TS9 is going to make your standard one want to sit there and cry...You'll see...

Thanks to everyone for all of the positive comments...It absolutely makes my whole day, plus it gives me something to show off to my wife! :burnout:

Re: Review of STRATDELUXER97's BOSS DS-1 MOD!

well, John's a player, but he also has the electronics know how, the soldering skills, and the obsession with tone to do the mods ... I personally wouldn't have the patience to mess with those little boards!

I've never seen John say so, but I imagine he spent a good deal of time tweaking his mods till they were just right

if someone told you that you could have boutique pedal tone for $80 or so, you'd laugh, but that's basically what it boils down to ;)

Is something of a religion if you ask me.....
It is the knowhow that matters!
And being able to use your ears, and test yourself to death...lol

Rid...I Know you know what it takes to voice anything...It's just hours and hours of trial and error and staring at boring circuit schematics looking for some magical change to the circuit...Take this capacitior out and try this value instead...Lower this resistor value here, what about a different opamp there? That's how I mod my pedals..I voice a pedal to sound good to me and I figure if I Like it,then the majority of other players will also..It's alot of fun while you learn also.. Absolutely nothing compares to all of the comments from all of you though...
