I listened to Curly's clips of the DS1 you modded and I have to say that while i usually play with a higher gain level I've never heard a DS1 sound THAT sweet or deep at lower gain.

well, B2D ..
first of all, two weeks later, I should say thanks for the compliment. although I think it was more of a comment on John's mods than my playing! :)

It's kind of interesting for me to go back and listen to some of these clips, as a little time has given me some perspective and objectivity.
They sound good!

I don't think I'm as good as some others on the forum at describing tone with words, so I've tried to make clips when possible, and let the clips do the talking.
At this point, I'd like to consolidate my clips more on my site, and explain my equipment a little better.

I've discussed one issue with John ... he voices his pedals with his strat through an early 70s Marshall, and I usually play my strat through my Blues Junior. This leads to some difference in tone - for instance, I told John I thought his SD-1 mod was voiced a little dark, but I attribute part of that to the difference in equipment. Also, my point of reference on a pedal is usually "everything straight up" .. in other words, I usually take a pedal I haven't played and set everything at 12 o clock, then adjust from there.

another issue is that John plays out with his band, and I just play at home, and most people feel that a tone that works at home just won't cut through in a live situation.

the first thing I notice when I plug into my bigger amps, like my Deluxe Reverb RI or BF Bassman, is the extended frequency range - higher highs, lower lows. My favorite tone is probably my strat straight into my '56 Deluxe - a very pure, but raw sound with endless sustain and great harmonics.
However, most players don't play tweed amps, and that's part of the reason I use my Blues Junior for most clips. It's a warm amp with a tone somewhere between Black Face and tweed tone.

Re: Review of STRATDELUXER97's BOSS DS-1 MOD!

for a long time, my motto was "guitar/ cord/ amp", and that's still true to a certain extent - I still want to hear fingers, strings, pickups, and wood. I usually like amps with simple circuits and guitars with stock switching and pickups that are vintage or "close to vintage" specs.

That said, we all tire of the same diet, whether it's food or guitar tone. I find one of the best ways to spice up my tone is to try different pedals. Pedals should have their own personality, but allow you to get a good tone, and hopefully, inspire you a little. I think we all like that experience of playing a new guitar, or a guitar with new pickups, or a new pedal, and feeling that you don't want to put it down.

You know, honestly, my ultimate goal would be to put together a hand full of original tunes, and manage to get some decent guitar tones in the process, and a variety of tones, both acoustic and electric.
I can't play like GoMano, or Robert_S, or any of the other many fine players on this forum, but I'd least like to get a tone that they could appreciate. :)

as I go back and listen to my clips, both with pedals, and the ones with just raw pickups, they're almost like markers or reference points for me to look at and say, "hey, I could use that tele tone here" or "that strat tone here", etc, etc. ...

As far as John's mods are concerned, I was probably one of the first to get his mods when he asked if folks would be interested. Frankly, at what he was charging, it was kind of a no brainer. John's arrived at his mods by spending time studying the circuits, then applying his knowledge of electronics and his ears to tweak the circuits till he's satisfied. His mods stand on their own for that reason.
But, since I did get some of the first mods, I wanted to post clips and let others decide for themselves if they were interested. I don't think I was as scientific or consistent as far as providing "before and after" clips as I should've been, but still, I hope they can help others make a decision.

lately, John's done a couple wah mods for me, and I hope to get some clips of those up, after I spend some time with them. (Frankly, my wah technique SUCKS, and I need some practice!) :) I'll just say that so far, they are both very vocal wahs.

So far, these are the mods I've gotten from John:

(2) Boss SD-1s (different clipping)

(2) Boss DS-1s

Ibanez TS7

Maxon OD9

Vox 847 wah

Vox 848 wah

they all have their place in my playing, and they all sound good!

Peace

Gary....Great posts as always buddy...First let me add how wonderful it was talking to you on the phone last night...
I can't believe I've modded that many pedals for you? No wonder I have no life! LOL

You know I'm right here to help you if you feel something needs the Gary tweak on your wahs...
