I'm back home now and I've been able to run these pedals through my other gear and get to know them a little better, so I thought I'd toss up some words and pics...

Line 6 Filter FM4:

What It Is:
The Line 6 FM4 Filter modeler is a collection of 16 different Filters and Synths, some old, some new that Line 6 has come up with. This is similar to the Digitech Whammy in that you probably would need to already have an interest in this type of effect to use it, it's not like other pedals like overdrive or chorus, it's definitely an acquired taste :)

Features:
There are 16 different synths/filters and they are all pretty cool sounding. If you just tweak ONE knob on ONE model, the sound can change a lot, which is pretty cool. Like the other Line 6 Pedals, you can save four presets, but with so many cool sounds available, it can be hard to narrow them down.

Left/Right inputs and outputs are available as well as a power supply and expression pedal jack. This would be pretty handy, especially for something like the Voice Box and V-Tron, to really get that vocal sweep going. It's ok without it, but not great.

Physical:
Physically, this thing is great. It's obviously larger than most pedals, but it's not very heavy. This isn't a sign of bad construction though, its shell is very durable and heavy duty, definitely able to stand up to good use.

Sound:
I really can even start to tell you how many cool and weird sounds are available in this pedal. If you like synths and weird filter type tones, just check this out. It can get cool thick 80s synths, lo-fi tones, alien spacecraft, "ray gun" sounds, screeching screams, insane warbles, it just really is a nutty pedal and hard to describe. Like I said before, with many of the models, if you just tweak one knob it can change the sound a lot, so you have many sound options to dial in.

Most models work best while using the neck pickup and clean/dirty amp sounds also change things a bit, but not in a bad way. Utilizing your pickups and amp channels will give you even more variations with this wacky pedal :)

Pros:
The tones available definitely cover a lot of ground. From your basic guitar synth, string synth, video game sounds up to wacky outer space stuff, this is full of cool sounds.

The construction is very nice and will surely hold up to a long period of use, so no worries there.

Cons:
So far, I just wish you could store more sounds than just four. Other than that, there's nothing else I can think of right now.

Conclusion:
This is definitely a great pedal for anyone interested in the synth/spacey sounds that doesn't want to shell out $$ for just one of the "real" pedals and needs to cover a lot of ground in this area. But like I said, you would probably already need to have some kind of interest in this type of pedal as it's not like an overdrive or other common pedal...it's really out there :)

MXR EVH PHASE 90
DSC08442.jpg

What It Is:
The MXR EVH Phase 90 is a reissue of sorts that combines the old "script" tone with the more modern phase 90 tone. Anyone that is into the Phase 90 knows that EVH used it during many solos and it was key to his tone. Because of this, lots of folks dig around for the old script models or do the R28 mod on reissue phase 90s to make it sound like the old ones. With this pedal, you can get both sounds in one unit.

Features:
This is obviously a pretty straight forward pedal. You have the speed knob and the script/modern push button. When this button is pressed in, the tone is basically like the old script model Phase 90. When it is out, it is like the modern Reissue Phase 90.

This also seems to have a bit of a boost, more than my old Phase 90.

It also has a 9V jack for power...

The BLUE LED is FRIGGIN BBBBRRRRRIIIIIGGGGHTTT! I mean BRIGHT! This sucker can light up a small room all by itself. It's not too bad, just as long as you don't look directly at it.

Physical:
This is a good looking pedal :) If you dig EVH then you will probably like the striped silk screen finish. It's definitely a lot better than the striped finished I put on a few of my pedals in the past :p

Like all MXR pedals, it's built like a tank and ready for war.

Sound:
Well you have both sounds, the script and modern tone but the difference isn't drastic, it is more subtle. While using distortion, the script in, and the speed around 8:30/9:00, you can get that lush Eruption sound happening.

I like using it with clean and dirty tones, but I've been leaving the speed knob fairly far on the left side to get a gentle sweep and it is very nice.

Pros:
Super easy to use, looks cool, sounds cool. The blue LED is very bright and nice...just as long as you don't look directly at it.

Cons:
Hmm, none that I can think of. The blue LED is bright, so don't hurt your eyes by staring at it. Well, the price might turn off a few people...I guess if you really wanted the same sound, you could do change up the R28 mod to include a switch of your own to get both tones and save some $$...but then you don't get the cool stripes :)

Conclusion:
I'm a sucker for modulation units and I like phasers a lot...This is a cool pedal, simple to use, and sounds nice.
