Rid Jam!!

Well kiddies, it's been some time since I posted a clip. Here's a clip over one of Rid's backing tracks - Van Sykes II. This one was just beggin for it...great backing track.

I did it in a single take, and had to punch in just a few small spots where the kids interrupted the take. It's got some mistakes, but for a single take with little rehearsal, I'm happy with it as it is a snapshot of where I'm at. It's not often you get to go off in G# minor - the SECOND saddest of all keys.

Les Paul Classic. Used both the neck Jazz and the bridge Distortion.

Gratuitous wankage?? Yes. Abuse of delay pedal?? Double Dog Yes. Do I care? Nope.

There are some really nice melodies happening in the piece. The solo(s) is (are) a bit meandering ... I think that perhaps if you used some of the melodies you played as a touchtone for the solos, there would have been more melodicism, and it would've come across a bit more polished sounding.

Overall, an excellent job, tho! Really like the track!!

I agree with that critique and appreciate it. I know that melodicism is a big part of your style, and I suppose the more I play and listen to myself and others, the more I come to believe that speed and flash are probably secondary to content. Your really do want to hear something you can sing back to yourself (gosh, did I say that?). Having said that, I have such a hard time putting that into practice, as what tends to happen with me is that the tune becomes "sing song-y." So, just something else to work on I suppose.

Being a slow backing track (and nicely arranged), it really lends itself well to melodicism. I'd like to hear someone else cover this one, as I think it's a *pretty* backing track - it has lots of "atmosphere".

My critique of my own cut were the pinch harm's. They're just so ingrained in how I play that I really have lost control of them - they just come popping out everywhere, and sometimes they're choked when you really need to let those things sing out. Listening back I think I need to start getting away from them as I think they've become somewhat of a crutch... run out of ideas, pinch something. Used to be that way with the trem, but now I rarely ever use it.

Thanks, Biu. Well, I saw the Lynch Man the other night. That dude totally attacks the instrument. I suppose I got a bit inspired. I played it through a few times to get a feel for it, you know, figure out what key it was in and such. Then I hit the record button and let 'er rip. That Les Paul just wants to tear it up, and sometimes takes on a life of it's own. Anyway, after I finished the first take, I was like, "that wasn't half bad" so I tried another take, and it just didn't happen. So, I went back to the first one and touched up a few things that I knew would be easy to fix.

I'm horrible about belaboring things - I'm a perfectionist, and once I start down that road, it's like 8 hours later and it's still not perfect. So, I just left the rest alone, mistakes and all since I didn't want to ruin the spontaneous feel about it.

That's the best way to do it, Matt!
I usually give myself a 1hr time limit to track the whole clip -- you're forced to live with mistakes, but there's an immediacy that I find attractive. You can feel the urgency coming through the speakers!!

I need some practice today, so I'll tackle the IMD solo, and see if there's anything that jumps out from this track, too. :)
