Re: Riff-Off 2.1: O0o0O vs. Inkvayvanhailstone

OOooOO just has too many things not right with it ... there's no confidence in the performance ... the part that couldve been a riff just wasnt 'delivered' ... the time is all over the place which results in no 'hook' to hang its hat on .. the out of tune bend seals the fate

inkvays was obviously a riff ... memorable, succinct, nice tone and performance

clear winner here

OOOOOOmg just doesn't sound good point blank, I hope this isn't offensive, but it's just plain lame.

Inkvay has a strong rhythm and actually sounds like music, and is actually riff-like.

As said previously, clear winner here.

That's a bit harsh and counter-productive IMO. I didn't find O0's riff lame, it just wasn't structured in a familiar, self-sustaining rhythmic flow, at least compared to the straight-ahead drive of inky's.

Put O0's riff against one from another battle, say RBG, and those two actually match each other in terms of odd-time. I bet that'd be a close fight, actually.

Perhaps, I disagree, but different strokes for different folks...

zackly

as an idea, i think the riff has real merit as the germ of a riff ... given proper attention, it could be executed as a very happenin' riff

OOooOO shouldnt give up on this at all .. but he should really listen critically to his playing and look for was to infuse it with energy and emotion and intentional content

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: O0o0O vs. Inkvayvanhailstone

What's the point in posting "voted"? How 'bout an opinion?

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: O0o0O vs. Inkvayvanhailstone

To avoid the inevitable heated discussion, and possibly having someone pull out because of the discussion and/or comments, as what happened last time.

that's a joke right?

No...it's not.

The last round suffered from too little discussion. Heck I went pretty far but no body gave me big props or busted my balls! Did you hate my stuff? Love it? I say post stuff good or bad. It's the only way anybody's going to learn. Win, great. Lose in flames. Great too. It's all about learning and getting better. If you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen. We're all big boys and girls are we not?

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: O0o0O vs. Inkvayvanhailstone

I do seem to recall voting for yours (Cookie Dough) all the way through. And I believe I posted positive comments each time.

However, I can see your point, but this isn't so much a "tell me what I'm doing wrong" type of thing. This is more of a "I'm confident in my abilities to go head-to-head with someone else". Constructive criticism is fine, but "that's weak, loser" comments are a kick in the nuts. No one ever improved by being kicked in the nuts. Ever.

I liked your stuff on every round. Your last riff, which I did vote for, lacked a little of the presence you would expect from a riff in a riff contest. It was one of those things that you would call a "passage" when you hear them in a song.

Happy now?

Back on topic - Inky's riff rocks. It's something that I'd like to hear in a song.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: O0o0O vs. Inkvayvanhailstone

O0o0O's riff, while it had good note selection and definitely a good bit of potential, wasn't played with the kind of energy or conviction that i'm looking for in a riff. good tone, good style, not enough energy.

inkvay(which i'm having trouble not pernouncing as yngwie) on the other hand is very memorable, with high energy playing and loads of style. didn't care for the tone as much, but that's just me.

My point exactly.

Exactly... +1 to both of you.

We're all perfectly capable of voicing our honest opinions in a diplomatic manner, aren't we? Just be cool and be honest and keep it respectful.

On the other hand... just because one person may not take criticism very well doesn't mean we shouldn't worry about stepping on people's toes. At some point you have to be honest and that may mean saying some **** people don't want to hear, even if it's for their own good.

Anyways... sorry for the hijack. Back to the contest.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: O0o0O vs. Inkvayvanhailstone

Inkvay by a mile. Got my foot tapping immediately, and it's full and rich. Excellent work.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: O0o0O vs. Inkvayvanhailstone

Dr. Bill stated it best.

The fact is we are NOT all big boys and girls. A finalist in the first Riff-Off is a teenager. We have a young member here who has submitted quite a few tunes in the Tips & Clips room for review. Some were better than others. Each submission got stronger in composition and execution. Does he have room for improvement? You bet. In fact, when constructive criticism was offered, he typically used it to improve his next recording. Yet slamming his work would be counterproductive.

In this battle, OOoOO caught my ear, then lost it in execution. I LIKE the direction implied at the beginning, but it just didn't seem to get quite there. I LIKE the clean tone.

As others have stated, Inkvay's riff is more memorable. I think there is room for improvement in the tone.

Kudos to both for entering the contest.

O0o0O
I feel like I'm just waking up, faced with the awkward juxtaposition of totally hawt dream with babez and the realization that my dog licking my face all over. I reached for my metronome to fend him off, but it was missing....

Inkvay
Inky plays to the cheap seats, wearing his most broken-in unitard. Somewhere Ronnie James Dio tries to take credit.
