PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are voting for your favorite riff in Round 2 of the January 2010 Riff-Off. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here. In this round, there are four head-to-head battles. Be sure to check out and vote for your favorite riff in the other three Round 2 matches, also found in the Tips and Clips room. To view the bracket for this month's Riff-Off, go here.

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Here are the links to each clip in this head-to-head:

nice playing guys ... it's the most difficult to decide of all the round 2 battles

to me, carlos's is obviously a riff ... maybe a bit of an obvious riff, but most definitely a riff .. i like the loose feel, greasy tone, and slinky vibe ... i also like that i can imagine that the tune that could be built off of this riff could go in any of a few different genre directions - very versatile

to me chumble's was very evident of technical prowess ... crisp playing and excellent time and again the use of harmonies is just plain frikkin cool ... but to me, as a riff - the repeatable 'atom' - it is too long ... in the end, this entry sounds more like a progression for a verse than a riff

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Chumble Spuzz vs. Carlos Spicyweiner

Another example of simplicity vs. complexity here. Both are played well, but Carlos' riff feels the most 'riff-like' to me, and makes me think of a smoky, seedy bar. Where Chumble's harmonized bits are cool (I love that stuff), it takes away from the feeling of a riff.

I voted for the Chumble. I found it "riffish" enough, as it has a central tonality (the palm mutes and scalar/arpeggiated lick) that is pleasantly capped by distinct but complimentary changes (the harmonized parts) at the end points.

Carlos' was nice, but I liked Chum's better.

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Chumble Spuzz vs. Carlos Spicyweiner

dude, if chumble's was brighter these could be in the same song. i'm not even joking, musically they almost sould like they could be the two different guitars in the same band. chumble listens to more tool, so he's the heavy rhythm section, etc etc.

this round is turning out harder for me to vote than the last:D

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Chumble Spuzz vs. Carlos Spicyweiner

These 2 are great riffs, Chumble is a cool opening riff and Carlos's is more of a main riff. They could actually be part of the same song with some tonal tweaks to make them fit together, if you load them both up and play Chumbles striaght into Carlos's it's pretty cool IMO. Hard to decide so I'm coming back to this in a bit.

Ha ha, exactly what I was thinking too!

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Chumble Spuzz vs. Carlos Spicyweiner

dude, i listened to carlos' first, and as his was finishing started chumble's. it could happen. actually, after this tourney is over, i would like to see these two contestants collaborate and make a track outta this. i wanna see these put into a song!

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Chumble Spuzz vs. Carlos Spicyweiner

Voted, Curious to know whether that minor third harmony from Chumble Spuzz is an overdub or played as part of the original riff. If it's an overdub, it brings up questions for me about what is and is not permissible along those lines.

overdubs are ok according to the rules

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Chumble Spuzz vs. Carlos Spicyweiner

I really like the feel of Chumble here

good solid metal riff

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Chumble Spuzz vs. Carlos Spicyweiner

To me this one boils down to a purely emotional, immediate response.

Carlos' riff is technically superior, more diverse, and perhaps even played more confidently.

But Chumble's in yer face, take no prisoners approach is all about instant satisfaction. I don't want dinner, dancing, movie, flowers, or a box of candies. I wanna get laid!

Not sure which was done, but it can be played on one guitar. Moody.

Can I vote for both? Can I? Hm? :scratchch

If we were able to grant percentages, I'd probably rate this one a 53:47.

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Chumble Spuzz vs. Carlos Spicyweiner

Oh, good stuff, both entries.

Carlos' riff could easily fit into the Load/Reload albums!

Chumble is also very good. Don't like the harmonies, though, but it's a very good effort nonetheless!

Carlos gets my vote in this one, it appeals more to me.

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Chumble Spuzz vs. Carlos Spicyweiner

That's about the percentages I'd use too, Stephen.

I really like the tone and the "in your face" feel of Spicy's riff but I'm giving the nod to Chumble for slightly more precise timing.

definetly!
They are both well played, well balanced and driving. The harmonies where nice on the chumbles track, and the groove was very cool on Carlos.

Anyway, Spicyweiner gets my vote, since it moved me more.:flowers1:

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Chumble Spuzz vs. Carlos Spicyweiner

This one was tough.

In the end, I could see myself air-guitaring Spiceyweiner's entry, so it gets my vote.
