PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

*** Update: Manwich got his clip in. There was some confusion about the deadline. Both parties agreed to a battle. PLEASE VOTE!!! ***

You are voting for your favorite riff in Round 2 of the January 2010 Riff-Off. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here. In this round, there are four head-to-head battles. Be sure to check out and vote for your favorite riff in the other three Round 2 matches, also found in the Tips and Clips room. To view the bracket for this month's Riff-Off, go here.

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Here are the links to each clip in this head-to-head:

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Manwich vs. Stockholm Syndrome

As of now it looks like I'm the only vote for Manwich. I'll admit it lacks a little polish and I wish it were looped. But for whatever reason I can really see this working and would love to hear how this builds in a song. It's a little difficult to hear perhaps but I could really see this being interesting in a full song with other instruments. Maybe I'm crazy and judging a riff sans band can be difficult, and perhaps one of the shortcomings of the rules. But I like the diversity and potential it offers.

Stockholm's is much more polished and professional. But to my ears it almost sounds like a throwaway riff. Kind of typical, not really inspiring to my ears. Tone-wise it's great but I don't think it's appropriate to take tone into account. Maybe if both entries are so close and hard to judge, tone and effects may bring something out. But stripped of all effects, and tone, I'm left with musical clipart.

Either you're Manwich or out of your mind.

Dude, it's well played, sounds good, and is musical. I can't say any of those things about the other riff. And I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth calling the other one a riff. Oops, there it is again. I need to stop now...

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Manwich vs. Stockholm Syndrome

Manwhich, you definitely would have benefited from playing through your composition one more time or looping it so that the intent would be more fully conveyed. Also, voters are instructed to ignore tone and quality of recording but I think a brighter EQ would have made your presentation stonger. I don't think this entry is representative of your true ability.

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Manwich vs. Stockholm Syndrome

A riff need not be constant, it just has to be consistent. A half-note rest is as much a part of a riff as a half-note trill.

That said, there's definitely something odd about Manwich's track. On one hand, if I look at it in a band context, I can see where the opening two notes with full band hits (think Hot Rockin by Judas Priest), would tie everything together. While it does establish the meter for the main body of the riff, I think the lack of backup hurts the interpretation, as does the sharp volume reduction at 00:04. Gotta get those production values up folks.

Stockholm's track is easy to get behind. It's a toe-tapper, for sure.

Gonna have to go with Stocky on this one for the simple fact it's more complete, if cliche`.

Sadly, I have not yet contributed to this fine endeavour. But given the right frame of mind I think you could start to see my point of view. Maybe light some incense and candles or something.
