Loved the emotion/feel spock evoked.

Loved strong's catchy riff and the tone he went for....

Antother great matchup!

interesting both were kinda the same vein. went with songstrings cause I like more upbeat stuff, but both were good.

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Spock vs. Strongstrings

ok - let me clarify ... yes i can find the tempo and count to 4 ... agreed ... (i can also seem to count a triplet feel to it, i think)

but to me, one of the numerous cool things that make spock's entry so happenin as a compositional element is that so few of the notes occur on the easily identifiable 'hook' beats ... am i hearing it wrong, or are most of the rhythmic elements occurring on the 'ands' ?

put another way, i'd love to know where the bass and snare are supposed to go :D

Perhaps this riff doesn't call for bass and snare. :)

I just put a drum beat to spock's riff if anyone would like to hear it. It's not perfect but it works

it seems to start off a bit off - but then it locks in for a bit. I had a hard time getting the tempo right and syncing it, but I think it gives you a general idea of something that could be done. The beat comes in about 9 seconds in.

Re: Riff-Off 2.2: Spock vs. Strongstrings

^ That kind of works :)

I sort of imagined he was playing it to a fast tabla beat.

i withdraw my comment ... that frikkin smokes !!

of course, the demonstration leads to the question that a guitar riff may in fact be optimal when it stands on its own without needing further explication ... but yeah, i totally wasnt hearing it until the drums locked it down as a concept ... and like i said, i want to hear the entire soundtrack to that film as composed by spock

Spock: Moody, atmospheric, melodic, and with just a shade of darkness. Conjures up images of a samurai in fuedal Japan meditating before a battle, with wisps of incense smoke curling up from the ceremonial fire set before him... very very cool.

Strongstrings: Cool bouncy tone... sounds like something you'd hear in a grimy biker bar somewhere in Texas, the kind of bar that I wouldn't do too well in. :D A little sloppy on the execution, but I like the grove and the turnaround lick. Good vibe.
