PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are voting for your favorite riff in Round 3 of the January 2010 Riff-Off. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here. In this round, there are two head-to-head battles. Be sure to check out and vote for your favorite riff in the other Round 3 battle, also found in the Tips and Clips room. To view the bracket for this month's Riff-Off, go here.

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

Spock: dude, I bow down for your Toolness! Awesome idea and execution. I kinda hear this as a bridge of a song, and I'd really like to hear the rest of that song too! Nice and tasty bends in there. However, I must say that your previous riff was a little more interesting, but then again, you raised the bar high for yourself there!

SS: nice one! As with Spock, I'd really want to hear the rest of the song too. Catchy riff for sure, and instantly recognizable.

However, Spock hits closer to my heart, so he wins. <3

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

These are two excellent and very evenly matched entries. I have no further comment beyond saying I had to listen to each six time before making a decision.

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

good close match. I liked the stockholm one better, made me jump around in my chair a little bit.

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

Stockholm's sounds like something I'd do, so it felt comfy. Dig them both.

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

Good work, guys.

I had to give a second listen to Spock's to "get it."

Stockholm hit me immediately.

Both are allsum.

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

Spock: I really love the off -time grind and groove here and clever use of space.
Would be great with a full band

Stock:Nice solid riff in a very Maiden style.

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

Spock, I love your riff. I needed to listen to it several times to get it, though, and I feel like a little more repetition would have worked in your favor. There just wasn't enough time between the fade in and the fade out to make your point. I'm really upset to have to say this after your epic riff last week. In fact, if you had Rollover Vote Weight on your riff plan, you'd get my vote.

As it is, though, I have to give it to Stockholm. What a powerful tone, riff, execution, everything! If I were better with my language, I'd have ways to describe this that simply don't come to mind here. In fact, I'd say this has the potential to challenge Spock's riff from last week. I know we're not supposed to judge on tone, but there's no getting by the power and graininess here. They work beautifully with your style to put the icing on the cake here.

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

Spock: I had to listen through it a few times to really get the riff, and I think it would have been easier to do that if the fades were not there. Especially at the beginning... I'm not opposed to using fade-ins on songs, but this is a riff contest, and it's important that the riff grab the listener's attention right away so they can latch on to it and feel the groove. I feel the fade-in inhibits that. Aside from that, good riff! Moody and melodic, just like the rest of his work. I dig the implied I-V change I'm hearing.

Stockholm Syndrome: NICE. Great riff over a VI-VII-i progression. I definitely wanna hear a song off this one. Very righteous-sounding. Excellent composition here.

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

Vulcan against Sweden.
I think Swedish women are hotter, but the Vulcan riffage has a special feel to it. Funny coincidence, since Vulcan stays for logic, not emotion, yet Spock's riffs have a very nice emotional vibe to it!

Stockholm's riff was very good too, it had edge, it had groove. But it was more or less too typical for me. I prefer more extraordinary stuff. Different tunings, different time signatures, different progression.

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

I tried to imagine both these riffs played on acoustic guitars to eliminate the 'bigness of sound' and see what the note choices said to me. Still having trouble choosing.

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

Spock's has a unique thing going on...it was good to hear him with some od in his tone...yet he still kept the mystical aura of his style of rock in it!!!

FREAKING AWESOME! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

This one's a tough choice. I can really dig both of them and can mentally project their musical surroundings.

Gonna mull these over for a few days.

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

Anyone else hear the weird fuzzy clicks in Stockholm's clip? Just my crappy speakers?

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

yep there are clicks - sounds like it was recorded too hot and it's clipping

Re: Riff-Off 2.3: Spock vs. Stockholm Syndrome

Yes I heard the clicks too.

The voting here shows clearly how "standard" chord progressions or a more "familiar" feeling is more welcome than the unconventional stuff.
