PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

(It's a little different this time around.)

You are rating one of sixteen riffs in Round 2 of the February 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other seven riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

Contrary to previous Riff-Off tournaments, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the four contestants with the highest average scores will advance to Round 3.

I encourage you to score each of the eight riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Here is a link to this contestant's Round 2 riff: Son of Fibonacci

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, PM or email me (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

Nice concept. Execution could be a tad better IMO. Maybe by using a pedal instead of a knob so the picking hand isn't flailing about trying to pick and swell at the same time.

Can't really find any other problems. Even the drones fit well, whether they were intentional or not.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

again a couple of listens helps this one - the ending note is very well placed - a great finishing touch

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

It's nicely played and the tone was cool. the lack of groove and emotions made it too "normal" guitar melody for me. Anyway, solid!

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

I was looking forward to this riffer's Round 2 submission and am not disappointed! The volume swells into a large hall or cavern reverb are beyond cool. I love the chord voicings and the single note bend at the end, though a bit extraneous, tell me Son has a great ear! Please advance!

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

Doesn't really do anything for me. Again, I think it's much harder to put your butt on the line and really write a "riff" than a pretty chord progression with volume swells.

Is this bad, no way, it's nice, but for the sake of this competition, it won't score well in my book.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

cool, different, will probably suffer accordingly.

I rated it high.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

Sounds like an intro to a Metallica record...right after the bent note fades, teh brootalz roll in. Nice. I gave this one a high mark.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

Now that I read how it was done, I am duly impressed. That being said, though, the music of it didn't really hit me. I thought at first it was all done in production, but now that I see it, it makes more sense. I'll rate it well just on execution alone.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

Cooooool!

Neat and spacey, the ending bend and release caps it off perfectly. Great use of the volume swells. Riffs like this are NOT easy to pull off. Manages to be different AND cool. Very, very nice.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

Great idea - could be a little better executed, but this is clearly not easy without a volume pedal. Props for a very good effort.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

This riff reminded me very much of a riff from round 1. I went back and listened to all the round 1 riffs again and the one I was thinking of was Son of Fibonacci's first riff. I hear a trend here. They are different riffs but very much in the same family and mood I think. I'd like to hear more variety from this guy and hear him get a little crazier. Or at least a different mood.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

For those who are curious, I spoke with Fibonacci, who told me the effect was created using a volume pedal.

Ah, that's cool. He and I might be liking the same music, I think. I hope he puts out more clips out here in the same vein.

Edit: listening more to the riff, I realize that the fast tempo he wants to have is not easy, even with a pedal.

I like everything except the fact that the bend was released. haaa. Nice one though!

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

nice atmospheric playing ... very ambient ... time was a bit uneven to my ears ... some tuning/intonation warble in there too ? ... despite, it makes a nice compositional piece

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

To me a difficult composition that would probably have more effect hearing it live. I don't think the recording did this one justice.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

Wow. 2 people really gave this a zero? Why bother voting? At least offer up some kind of justification. If it's not your cup o tea, leave without voting, but don't bash the work.

Re: Riff-Off 3.2: Son of Fibonacci

This one pushes the boundaries of what I personally consider a "riff". Nevertheless I really like this entry and the ending is great. Nicely done.
