PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are rating one of sixteen riffs in Round 1 of the March 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other fifteen riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

As with last month, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the eight contestants with the highest average scores will advance to Round 2.

I encourage you to score each of the sixteen riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Here is a link to this contestant's Round 1 riff: Bifidus Riffularis

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, PM or email me (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

Awesome riff!

I would like to hear a little cleaner tone, but I was able to remove the tone from the awesomeness of the riff and just listen to the notes.

The walk-ups and turnarounds were perfect, I would definitely like to hear a song built off of this one!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

I liked the riff. The tone could be better, but I didn't gig you for it. I like the battle name also!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

I liked this one - I like the fat tone and the melody.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

Nice. I appreciate the contrast between the grungy, thick, distorted tone and the happy and upbeat mood it conveys. I could see this one gettin' kinda funky with a lead in there. Well done.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

Great riff . . . not a huge fan of how the guitar sounds, but it seems to work in this case.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

love this riff

crappy production values aside, this has "summer time, top down, good time, groovin' hit" written all over it

high marks

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

Fantastic riff, I loved it.. the tone could have been better but I got passed it because the riff rocked so much... You NEED to make a song from this... awesome...

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

cool riff, and i know we're not supposed to dock for recording quality, but i have to think that tone was pretty intentional, so i docked a point for that. it was just distracting.

BUT, that said, you still get one of my higher scores for a really great, original riff.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

Not bad! I dig it. Kinda seemed like a 90's grungy thing on Prozac. :D Real catchy... I'd like to hear the rest of this song

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

I like the upbeat feel of it, as others have said. But while listening to it I couldn't tell if it was a fuzzed out rendition of a Stones tune or just inspired by some classic song. I don't think the notes are the same, so I'm not going with that implication...but it does remind me of something that might have been released between '71 and '75. I like the way it was played.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

Wow, sounds like a super saturated Fuzz of some kind. Great riff that I'd like to hear being played live rather than a recording!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

Coool! Very fun vibe. Good stuff. I'd personally like a more crunchy british sound, me thinks. But that doesn't matter.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

I think this riff is great. I immediately went to figuring out what would fill in the rest of the band. I think the tone is chewier than a 2-year old Now and Later, but I've got no problems with it.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

I saw nothing wrong with the tone. But then I'm using studio monitors for PC speakers.

Excellent riff and I feel the tone matches it, even though there are other tones that would match it as well.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

The tone isn't bad, it just needs to be played at deafening volume. I like this one lots!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Bifidus Riffularis

Nice groove here with plenty of attitude and depth. Good pickup choice too.
