PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are rating one of sixteen riffs in Round 1 of the March 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other fifteen riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

As with last month, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the eight contestants with the highest average scores will advance to Round 2.

I encourage you to score each of the sixteen riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Here is a link to this contestant's Round 1 riff: Buzzardo

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, PM or email me (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

Sounds like Clapton and Allman playing one guitar!

Solid riff, but for me it lacks the je ne sais quoi that makes me go "OH DAMN!"

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Buzzardo

Do I sense two guitars in the later part of that? Something seems a little off.

Overall I confess I really dig this one though. I'll chalk this one up to personal taste since I really dig the blues rock 70's influence this has. Thin Lizzy, Mountain, Uriah Heep, etc. Good old fashioned rock n' roll. I can see this really turning into a fun jam. Well done.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Buzzardo

I really liked this one. It has that Layla & Crossroads feel to it. I don't mean that this riff reminds me of them, or that you copied them. It just has that great feel, if you know what I mean.

foghat inspired fan in the house - cool!!

not an epic classic blues-rock riff - but nice n tight
i like this

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Buzzardo

Definitley an Allman vibe going on here. Very cool. I wish it was a little louder, though. Nice job.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Buzzardo

Cool, liked the riff and the tone. Get's a good score from me!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Buzzardo

Nice one! Not groundbreaking, but I can definitely see the blues club cheer up when you start kicking this thing off in the intro. Good tone too!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Buzzardo

Agreed. This'll get feet tappin and heads bobbin, and when the drums and bass kick in, there'll be feet on the dance floor.

Excellent job :friday:

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Buzzardo

Good work on the riff, but please bring up the level a little bit. Again, I wish I had more positive commentary, but I don't have anything to say that hasn't been said yet.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Buzzardo

This is not my favorite style of music, so I feel pretty under-qualified to judge. That being said, I can tell a good guitar player when I hear one, and I hear one.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Buzzardo

Very well played, and I agree with Will that it would make a stronger statement mixed a little hotter.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Buzzardo

I got the crossroads/Allman vibe as well. A riff that when you hear it, you turn it up.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Buzzardo

I liked this one a lot. The tempo is great, ist's well defined and groovin'. Not very original, but kickin'!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Buzzardo

Nice pace and content, - stands well as a riff on its own without the need for the rest of the band, although I can hear the full band about to flood in for a solid reinforcement.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Buzzardo

that was fun. lotsa energy, nice tempo. could see it in a rockin' tune.
