PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are rating one of sixteen riffs in Round 1 of the March 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other fifteen riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

As with last month, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the eight contestants with the highest average scores will advance to Round 2.

I encourage you to score each of the sixteen riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Here is a link to this contestant's Round 1 riff: Hirsute Henry

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, PM or email me (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

Voted!

I like the riding rhythm, I feel like I'm riding on horseback into battle

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

I felt like this has more than one riff in it.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

I like how it fades in at the beginning before the riff starts. It had me thinking "ok, here it comes".

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

Tone is way too buzzy and distracting. Makes it hard to listen to the whole riff.

Actually I count two riffs. They're both good riffs but that's not the name of this game. I know it can be hard to cut back and simplify your grand ideas (I have the same problem) but for a riff-off there's too much here.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

started off like a cool enough chuggy thing a la maiden maybe .. then the octavy thing came in ... lost the bead .. if it had been the second part only, wouldve gotten higher marks from me

the tone didnt he;lp any ... but it wasnt a problem for me near as much as the '2 halfs' problem

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

I liked it, maybe too many riffs tho... I do see that like the others said, but it simply rocked so much that I have to give it a high score anyways...

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

Not bad... a gallopy Phrygian riff with a nice grungy dirty tone that's nice and full and rich. It suits the riff well.

Strap on yer Peacemaker and lock up yer daughters! Hirsuite Henry's comin' to gitcha!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

I liked this one too. Plenty of attitude and pace.
Very middy mix which needs good phones not to hurt the ears.
I hear two tones and versions of the same riff, just with a different mood, but the same notes and riff.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

sorry, but i can't stand the whole "hang around on an open D and do some octave work" thing. nothing against the riff itself, it's just not my style at all. i think maybe if you changed root notes it could have scored higher for me.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

Not my favorite by any means but I liked it although there was too much going on to call it a riff. Good work though.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

Hm. Toolesque riff. Not sure what to think of it yet.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

Toolesque riff.

I can't believe it took 12 comments for someone to say this. It took me about a second and a half to hear that.

I think it's very well done. Definitely top three of the round, and I've only got one left to listen to. It's crisp, well-paced, and I don't think the tone is half bad.

I think you're getting away with something adding the second riff, but I'm not judging. (Well, I am, but you understand what I'm getting at.) It works here, although I reserve the right to call other people out on this in the future.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

I was originally going to rate this higher, but then the second riff came in. Still liked it though.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

The tone is a little too loose for me but it works for the riff. I like both halves of the riff and gave an above average score.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Hirsute Henry

The tone fits the bill perfectly. Very emotional, nicely progressing and inspiring! I Wish I could write this kind of riffs!
