PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are rating one of sixteen riffs in Round 1 of the March 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other fifteen riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

As with last month, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the eight contestants with the highest average scores will advance to Round 2.

I encourage you to score each of the sixteen riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, PM or email me (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

Nice ZZ Top type of tone, the riff is pretty straight, it's cool because it could be flexible: could anchor a Texas blues song or a metal ripper, depending on the tone and the percussion. Very cool.

This, ladies and gents, is clearly a riff in my book. Well executed, the tone works well for it, and it hooks me like a riff should. It doesn't overly stimulate my senses but it's not bad. I too wonder where this riff will take me and I suppose that's one of the jobs of a riff. It's not meant to be the whole song, just whets my appetite and leaves me hungry for more.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Lipstick Rodeo

very much a riff - so full marks for hitting the definition

sounded like it couldve been a mid 70s Kiss riff (good thing)

very solid effort if not with instant star quality

i predict this one will be close to the cut off line - not sure which side it will be on

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Lipstick Rodeo

Solid effort, I think that should get you into the next round. Great tone, crunchy and defined... solid riff and I can really hear the music coming with this one... not the best one of the round but a good riff none the less...

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Lipstick Rodeo

Good tone, good recording, good execution, but I feel like I've heard this riff before.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Lipstick Rodeo

My favorite tone of all the entries, it has got a kind of Billy G feel to it. Solid riffing.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Lipstick Rodeo

Liking it. It's definitely rockin' and rollin'. Not groundbreaking, but it's got balls without too much whistles. Gnarly tone. Solid effort.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Lipstick Rodeo

Interesting comments so far.

The riff is great, although the tone seems a bit too spread out. Could just be me.

Anyway, good job.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Lipstick Rodeo

Nothing groundbreaking, but fits the bill. I'll mark it well, because I see great potential for Round Two.

Thank you for reading my mind and expressing my thoughts so accurately!
This is one of my favorites this round .... pure riffness!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Lipstick Rodeo

This riff commands attention! Right at the end, it made me think something huge was gonna happen next! Nice Job!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Lipstick Rodeo

kinda basic, but down and dirtay the way I like my rock and roll.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Lipstick Rodeo

good riff. i don't hear the "70s KISS" or the 80s Generic thing though.

it's got a dirty feel to it. To me it sounds somewhere between Molly Hatchet and Motorhead. That's just my own inerpretation. if you want to hear where i'm coming from, check out "beating the odds" by molly hatchet... you almost hit that rhythm pattern on the nose. sheer coincidence though.

overall kudos on the execution. stay frosty for the next round.
