PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are rating one of sixteen riffs in Round 1 of the March 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other fifteen riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

As with last month, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the eight contestants with the highest average scores will advance to Round 2.

I encourage you to score each of the sixteen riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, PM or email me (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

Total headbanger!

I think the riffage was being played faster than I can listen :laugh2:

I love the ending, very assertive and fun!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Riff 'n' Chips

I thought this was a good, above average metal riff.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Riff 'n' Chips

I didn't realize The Great Kat was a SDUGF member. ;)

Tone is buzzy and distracting and punches me in the face and makes my nose bleed.

After I wipe off with a Kleenex I can sort through the distractions and I confess I like what's going on here. I'm a sucker for contrast so they squealing harmonics and the chunky ending are nice additions to my way of thinking. The second guitar harmony works well too.

I'd suggest cleaning up the main, fast part in the beginning though. This is what really defines the bulk of the riff and it's getting lost in the speed and tone. Could be more articulate.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Riff 'n' Chips

the different endings at the end of each repeat are a problem for me
it takes skill to execute this kinda thing and i am guessing in its genre it would have fans

not enough to really rise up for me

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Riff 'n' Chips

Could've been played a little tighter, but the single-note sections still make my head spin, and that's a good thing. Good job.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Riff 'n' Chips

Yep, I like it .... good stuff, someone's going to have their head ripped off by this one! Lol

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Riff 'n' Chips

Dang, Riff'n'Chips has ADD on steroids. Really cool. The early build up part kinda reminds me of Dream Theater's Ytse Jam.

Man, I'm having two helicopters hovering right by my eardrums. :)

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Riff 'n' Chips

"ARE YOU READY TO BE ABUSED BY THE GREAT KAT?"

Seriously fast, but the timing issue on the other track kinda drags it down.

Good job though :friday:

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Riff 'n' Chips

I wish I had some commentary. Really not too much to say, except that this must have been played hundreds of times in order to hit the pinch harmonics properly that quickly. I think a WHOLE LOT OF PRACTICE went into this one.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Riff 'n' Chips

There's something going on with the timing near the beginning that I can't quite figure out. I was waiting for the same thing to happen after the repeat (which would've been freaking awesome!), but it never did. Still, I wish I could bend and squeal that tightly.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Riff 'n' Chips

I like mostly the tempo of this one. the timing needs more practice, but all in all it sits well. Great riff!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Riff 'n' Chips

Nice!
Great tone through the phones here, those pinches were hit spot on and really gave the riff character. High energy riff with plenty of movement and attitude.
Good work.
