PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are rating one of sixteen riffs in Round 1 of the March 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other fifteen riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

As with last month, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the eight contestants with the highest average scores will advance to Round 2.

I encourage you to score each of the sixteen riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, PM or email me (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

I could totally feel imaginary drums and bass in this one --- for that, I give you high marks for musicianship --- you must be an experienced songwriter!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

To some this might qualify as two riffs. But I'm prepared to accept this as a single riff since that second part is so short and could be argued that it's merely a fill or turnaround for the main riff.

I love distortion! I love playing distorted, I love the feel of distortion, I love thee dynamics distortion brings, and I love feeling the strings come alive with electrified and crunchy distortion!

I have to admit this is another riff that goes overboard with it and becomes distracting though. Is the guitar track doubled here? Maybe just a single would work better and be less...well just less.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

cool

i like the fliplets fills ... nice blend of rhythmic and melodic content ... the little tag chunky chord thing is distracting, but not terribly

again, not my taste in tone or genre, but pretty nicely executed

"Ma! Come quick!!"

"What is it honey?"

"Uncle Paul's drunk again and he's eaten all of our hamburgers and is threatening to burn the back yard down with a quart of gasoline and a zippo. I haven't seen the cat since he got here. I'm scared!!"

Very well played, I agree with this sounding much better than average. Not my style but I like this one alot.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

Tight tone and well played. I would like to hear the rest of the song.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

Attitude, man. Nice'n'tight! Can totally envision this riff rocking out in a big-ass stadium with the cheering fans.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

It'd mud up in a stadium.

Nice riff, nice tone, flawless execution, but nothing nut-kicking IMO.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

Oh, Uncle Paul.

Don't let everyone else give you a hard time. They're only tattletales. Did you record this in the bedroom with lil' Jimmy?

Okay, now that it's obvious that I get the joke, let's talk about the riff. Based on the name alone, I thought it would have more of an Ozzy or Sabbath feel, but I get the sense that it's more of a power-metal thing. I don't feel like there's a whole lot of room for a rhythm section here, but it could work.

And if you come in as Lyle Chipperson next round, I'll know who you are immediately.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

Tight like that pair of wishful thinking jeans I've been holding onto since 2002.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

This is not a style that I listen to or play, but the riff is exceptionally well done. High marks for you, Uncle!

By the way, I don't get the name or joke or whatever. I hope at the unveiling some of the contestants will tell us about their name selections.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

Nice!
Well played and good tone for the style.
Would be a wall of sound with the rest of the band.
