Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

I was having the same impression. Or maybe that they are both movements from the same film: Riff B sounds like the anticipatory music (i.e. something's about to happen) and Riff A reminded me of the violence music (i.e. monster chasing/killing someone). Both very good entries.

Riff B also brought to mind Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight for some reason.

This reminded me of another song - Sorcerers Pledge by Candlemass

Both riffs are top notch but voted for Riff B

I plead guilty to having voted prior to reading the Title Bout riff criterion. Fortunately, I still would have voted as I did. Both submissions are excellent!

Sorry for the delay, guys. My availability has been sporadic as of late.

So, as for the results, the winner is...

B2D once again!!!

Congrats, Brendan. You've held your title once again.

Great job from both guys. I was most interested in hearing what they came up with given the horror criterion. Not disappointed in the least. :)

Dang, Brendan is a true riffmaster..! Congrats! And congrats to ex-250 for a very good effort as well.

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

Achtung!! My identity has been revealed!!

Yep, B was me.

Thanks to all who voted for me and got creeped out by the submission. This was less riffy than most of my other stuff... more of an odd arpeggiation but it worked and Keith OK'd it.

This round was HARD. It's one thing to play to a set of musical rules but to develop a given concept is something much more difficult because it's all in the interpretation. I went through about 5 or 6 different ideas before I settled on one the night before.

I honestly wanted to do something more like what ex250 did... something more Sunn O))) like but I couldn't get a tone I liked enough to try that out with. Plus with recording direct that didn't afford me any feedback to work with so I went the other direction with it.

This riff is a rewrite of the main riff to a song I have in the works. I recorded the guitar totally clean and dry (it's my Silo with a JB split) and did all the effects in Garageband. I added that scratchy, grainy, slightly fuzzy sound with the BitCrusher, and added a wobbly chorus sound along with some verb and delay.

Congrats to ex250 for a round well played and for being the March Champion!

I didn't even realize this was going on. Sorry I missed it but congrats anyway. I think the riff writing criteria this time around was pretty cool. Much prefer this concept to tech stuff.

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

congrats to B2D!

and i agree that this was a tough one. i also came up with a bunch of stuff first, it was all more eerie but i didnt think any of it counted as a "riff."

i think my entry sounds like crowbar. haha

i've actually been wanting to do something doomy for a while, because as i told PUH when i sent him my entry, "what good is a fanbase if you can't alienate them?" :D the metallica school of making music.

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

did either of you guys intentionally detune/mistune your gutiars for this? or are they effects added when recording or mixing? definitely added to the creep factor for me
very cool

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

mine was tuned to C, and i left the intonation a bit off so it sounds creepier and more unpleasant. wanted to get some weird overtones.

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. ex-250

Congrats to both for excellent riffs, and to B2D for hanging onto the title. :friday:

Never saw this question until now, sorry about that.

My guitar was tuned, low to high, Db-Ab-Db-Gb-Bb-Eb

Basically Drop D, down one half step from standard. ALL of the effects were done in Garageband. There's reverb, a warbly chorus, and a bitcrusher on there. The guitar was recorded totally dry with a POD.
