Rivera Mick Thomson KR-7 amp.

Hey,

Has anyone played the Rivera Mick Thomson KR-7 sig amp "raw"?

The clips i've heard of the K-TRE on the old Rivera site weren't that impressive to me. It seemed a bit thin to me. But Mick's sig is a re-worked version of that as far as i'm aware.

Here's the mini-info on the MT KR-7- "Mick Thomson and Paul Rivera adjusted the frequencies in the midrange to give the amp more punch and bring more definition to the bottom-end. Mick also had the top end a little "sweetened" to compliment his guitars. Mick wanted this amp to be flexible for all playing styles but specialize in aggressive, quick and defined riffs".

Better midrange, more defined low end is right up my street but i've never heard the word "sweetened" before when referring to high end. Can anyone explain what that means or give me another more commonly used word?

I'm wanting to know how the Mick Thomson amp compares in terms of tightness to the VHT Pittbull Ultra-Lead (Which he has used before so he no doubt values tightness in an amp).

It doesn't say on the site, but Mick is an EL34 tube man just in case anyone is wondering what tubes it takes. I can almost guarantee it's EL34 tube driven. Jim (Root- other Slipknot guitarist) is a 6L6 man & i thought he was to have a sig too, but he's been using Orange amps of late so maybe that's changed.

Anyways, any info will be appreciated. A comparison to amps already out there would be cool too.

Thanks alot

- Steve.

Re: Rivera Mick Thomson KR-7 amp.

the kr-7 is based off the kr-100.

i think alll of the knucklehead series has the 'focus' control which controls the tightness of the bottom end. you should be able to get the amp as tight or loose as you want with this.

'sweetness to compliment his guitars' sounds to me like they based the e.q. on an ibanez rg drop tuned with emg pickups

Re: Rivera Mick Thomson KR-7 amp.

@ KSmith63- Thanks for your reply!

Yeah i can't see it being a "loose" amp since Mick is particular about that type of thing. I wonder how it'll compare to the super tight amps though. If it's as tight or tighter than a Bogner Ecstasy then it'll be worth a look. There's nowhere near where i can try 1 out so i'll have to do a special trip. I don't mind doing that though.

Mick uses Mahogany superstrat guitars w/active pickups as you know so i'm assuming "sweetened" means made a little bit brighter than usual to counter the warmth of a mahogany body which in Drop-B can be a touch muddy, but i wonder what sweetened specifically meant. Not a problem, i was just curious.

Re: Rivera Mick Thomson KR-7 amp.

To me, sweetened would mean a smoother/creamier top end as Emg's in general can get a bit harsh on the high frequencies (especially the 81 or 81/7). Just a thought!

Re: Rivera Mick Thomson KR-7 amp.

Ja i have EMG's in my Maverick JR4 & the high end can sometimes be a touch harsh, although i like that about them when i'm in Drop-B.

Mick uses Mahogany RG guitars with Blackouts in though so i'm not sure if the treble in the Blackouts are harsh or not. (?).

I'll drop them an e-mail & post the reply.

1 thing with the KR-7 cab is that Mick uses the Celestion G12K-100 speakers in which i've heard can sound pretty muddy when you're tuned low.

Re: Rivera Mick Thomson KR-7 amp.

Well you gotta remember that Mick just started using Blackouts. Everything they have recorded is with EMG's.

Re: Rivera Mick Thomson KR-7 amp.

Yeah i realise that but i think this amp will be balanced to go with his Blackout-equipped guitars as opposed to EMG's. I remember this kind of got released about 6 months back & then got delayed so maybe that was during the change of pickups & he needed to tune the amps differently?

That's my take on "sweetening" treble frequencies as well.

Re: Rivera Mick Thomson KR-7 amp.

I wouldn't say any amp "needs" sag. The bass can sound big without having sag. ENGL's "raw" are huge sounding amps but the low-end is as tight as a nun's cunt.

I found a clip of this amp on da tube- http://youtube.com/watch?v=VfYIZgwlaXc (They managed to find 1 of the worst guitarists possible to demonstrate their product which is a smart move).

Sounds pretty awesome as a metal amp. Not sure how it'll compare to the ENGL Fireball "raw" & it doesn't seem to have the tone quality of the VHT Pittbull line of amps, but this is from a video so.............
