Roasted maple necks?

Re: Roasted maple necks?

I'm not the person you asked but I very lightly oiled mine–felt incredible without a finish but felt perfect with just a light touch of oil on it :)
May I ask what type of oil? Are we talking a finish oil like tung or linseed, or just a conditioning/lubricating oil like lemon, mineral, motor, etc?

Makes some sense that a light oil would improve the feel. Play the neck for long enough and it'll get that way naturally, but no shame in hurrying that along a little.

I use a very light amount of Lemon Oil on the neck of the Roasted Maple.

TruOil on my non-Roasted Maple necks (I sand the backs of them down to bare wood, hate the poly feel.)

Re: Roasted maple necks?

Warmoths roasted options are limited if you want to custom order a neck and now wait for one you like to arrive at their showcase. They just offer maple, no flame or any other variations. Most important for me, I don't like the color these necks have. Musikraft offers more options on woods and color.

Re: Roasted maple necks?

Maybe the musikraft isn't roasted the same. Warmoth clearly states that leaving it bare doesn't affect the warranty so they must be confident about it. I have one and it has no finish. It's a great neck and I expect to get the same when I want another neck. By the way, I just went on their site and built up two necks, one roasted maple and the other maple with a finish. The roasted maple was $40 cheaper.

Re: Roasted maple necks?

Yeah, but the roasted maple on Warmoth is only $40 more than standard.....thats the comparison which is relevant here. So maybe you spend an extra $60 premium to have it roasted to a level you want effectively.

Re: Roasted maple necks?

It's really simple, AlexR. There is no right or wrong here. It's your guitar. If you don't like it, just get something else.

Re: Roasted maple necks?

Can I ask why you oiled it? Not that I disagree with that, but what do you like better about the oiled finish vs the way it came?
to stop it drying out too much, just like you do with a rosewood fingerboard or any other. unfinished wood etc. All wood will dry out and crack given time if you don't care for it.
The oil also stops (or at least slows) the fingerboard from soaking up all your sweat, dirt, dead skin and corroded string particles too so it looks nicer for longer.
The oil does darken it a little but I can live with that. I chose the roasted maple for the feel and the tone more than looks, although I really do like the look of it as well.

edit: the other night i was at a friends place and he just had a musikraft neck built for his tele. Stunning neck. AAA grade flamed quartersaen maple, roasted then covered in clear gloss nitro. That was nice to play too. Different feel of course tho due to the gloss finish.

Exactly

There is only more information and less.....I prefer the more, and hence try and explore this in thread irrespective of any other posts.

I'll add a few more to the above reply.

We oil non finished fretboards regularly. Fretboards have less contact with our hands than the back of the neck. It's only logical to oil a non finished neck like we do with a fretboard. How often will you do that depends how often you play your guitar, where you play it (bedroom, indoors/outdoors gigs etc) and how much it's affected (sweat, dirt, weather etc).

Oil is not a hard finish. Oil needs regular reapplying. Both fretboard and the back of the neck need oil if there are unfinished. Some even put wax, depends if you like how it feels.

Any unfinished neck will need oil at some point.
