Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

I have always used D'Addario XL 10's and I always will. I've tried ernie ball, dean markley, GHS, DR, Dulnlop, gibson and a few others and I still prefer the D'Addario XL's over any of these. DR's are probably my second favorite - very good quality strings

SIT Power Wound 1046 on electrics, eliminate high E and move the 13 and 17 over one and add a 21 plain for lap steels.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

I know that you don't care for Ernie Balls, but they've always been good for me. Recently, I got a really good deal on Dunlop Strings, so I'll use those for now.

Even though I have my preferences, as long as they are 9-42 nickle wound, I'm usually good. As with the Dunlops, if I can get another brand, for less money, then I'll at least try them.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

i use basically whatever brand that i can find on 0.12 for E tuning (yeah, you know that you are heavy when .12 is the only that feels right on standar)

one of the most i liked is an sudamerican brand, Magma, then elixir and fender, actually i tried to find DR and Dunlop on 0.12 but for electric they only had to .10 :(

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

I've tried a bunch of brands but I always seem to come back to D'Adarrio. Not because they are necessarily the best, but they are really good and you can find them in just about any guitar shop, so it's more of a ease of use thing.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

I used to use 11-52s or 12-54s.. Then I ruined my hands, and had to stop playing for close to a year.

Nowadays I use 9-42s on Strats and 10-46s on Les Pauls. Sometimes heavier, depends on the guitar. Some feel great with light strings, others with heavier strings.

Its all Ernie Balls if I can get them, or Jim Dunlops if I need to buy locally. The EBs just have this great feel, and sound great. JDs are a close second - very nice feel, just go duller much faster. Pure nickels are fun at times, though I dont experiment much anymore - I have kinda gotten to the stage where I just want stuff that works consistently, and EB strings have always done that for me, and they rarely break with Floyd Rose usage :)

True, I had to buy some EXL158's this week, the only 13-60+ strings they had. Boo. No one plays in B anymore, I guess I'm outta date.

I did order the La Bella HRS 72's and some 74's so I can try the 70 if the 64 is too floppy in A. We'll see about those.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

I've used Ernie Ball strings almost exclusively since I started playing guitar. That's about 20 years, I guess (scary). They've never failed to give me the tone and feel that I want. I like D'Addarios too, but if I have the choice, I'll pick the EBs. D'Addarios sound too tinny for too long after being installed, IMHO. GHS feel weird to me. Coated strings? Hell ****ing no! They sound and feel like ****.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

I use EB Cobalt Skinny Top-Heavy Bottoms. 10-52 tuned to drop C#. Works great for me.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

Daddario balanced tenstion set (11s) For D tuning, oh I swap out the third to wound string, and when I wanna tune to drop C I swap 50 to 56.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

Daddario .10s on my 24.75 scale axes and .009s on my 25.5

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

Ill have to try elixers. Just got some cobalts for my 7string.

Used to use boomer in high school. I miss those. Also used blue steels. Those were great. I switched to diaddarios to try em. Now i want something new again haha

I need some 13s for C#. And some bright strings for my semi hollow in standard tuning. Preferably 10s or 11s.

I cant do 9s. Waaay too light

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

DR Neon Coated. I just tried my first set on the RG w/ the X2N... I'm heading back to Guitar Center right now to stock up on them.

The coating makes it super easy to do bends. I enjoy them quite a bit.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

D'addario .010-.052. I usually tune down a 1/2 step.

I've grown really fond of having heavier bass side strings. They bring the chunk!

I've been meaning to build a .0095-.048 set or something like that for standard tuning uses but I haven't gotten around to it.
