Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal?

Re: Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal?

^ for the money you'll spend (or waste) trying to find a good pedal to get solid tone out of that amp, you could have the same volume and power out of a Vox VT30.

Metal Muff is what, $80? Full Bore is $99...by the time you buy the third pedal, you should've bought a new amp.

Just sayin...metal is the new standard for guitar music and it's the easiest type of tone to dial in on a modern modeling amp. Do yourself a favor.

Re: Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal?

Id have to get the Vt50 or Vt100 so I could gig with it. But then my problem with that is at that point I might as well just save for a proper Marshall.

The VT100 will give you a better Marshall sound than a Marshall.

uh.... no it won't. it'll give you a semi-digital reproduction of what should be a marshall sound. not sayin' it's bad, just not the same. of course if you think it's better, who am i to argue?;)

Re: Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal?

A local music store is getting a Metal Muff in this week so I can go try it out. I don't really want to go and get an amp cause of money and that if I get one itd prob be a Marshall tube stack. All I really need is just something to give me some chunk at the moment.

I haven't really been able to find any of these pedals you guys recommended in local stores to try out. They keep trying to push the MT-2 or the Metalcore on me :p

Re: Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal?

I tried the Metal Muff + Top Boost today for the first time and...
It's effin' awesome!
Much more versatile and transparent that I thought it would be.
Tried it with a PRS SE Tremonti.
The boost works really well, and it can do much more than just Metal actually, the EQ is hypersensitive and versatile.
It can do from classic metal, and even classic rock if you tweak enough, to a sledgehammer of destruction that would make Kerry King proud.

Make sure you try it!

No way in hell would a VT100 sound better then a Marshall, not gonna happen. Besides, if you really are considering going the modelling route might as well then get something like a Line 6 POD X3 Pro and you'd be much better off.

Re: Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal?

Yeah, I'm trying to get away from modeling. I have a Boss Me-20 and I'm just hating how digital it sounds. Selling to buy whichever pedal I settle on.

Re: Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal?

The two distortion pedals I use are the Marshall Guv'nor and the MXR Fullbore Metal. The Guv'nor compliments a Marshall amp nicely. I haven't used my Fullbore Metal too much yet but I was impressed with it initially.

Re: Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal?

There's a thread over at Kramer Forum, talking about modellers and so on, mostly Line 6 stuff. Someone posted this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6Y7MQxdIhg
That guy is using an X3 Live :haha:

I'm not saying get a modeller, there are lots of good pedals out there. Just gotta go out and try them yourself, everyones ears and fingers, setups and tastes are different.

Good idea. I tried one and hated it. There is a ton of praise for the metal muff and many are bound to just buy it on that alone without trying it. Who would have known that a distortion pedal could sound so bad. Unless you really do like buzzy muddy distortion. Not me. You're better off with modeling technology of some sort than a pedal.

Re: Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal?

Would a 50 watt tube amp be good enough for gigging? What amps are good for classic rock/metal? Should I be looking for a combo, or a head and cabinet?

That is if I try to go the amp route.

a 50 watt tube amp is more than enough for gigging. I'd go for a combo personally, to make transporting my gear a tad easier, though it doesn't matter if you choose combo or head+cab.

don't dismiss modelling because of your experiences with boss. they aren't the specialists. It's like cursing out Toyota for making a crappy version of the Camaro.

Re: Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal?

You'll probably never need more than a 50W tube head with 2x12 cab.
Don't think about the power right now. Any 10W tube amp can be louder than drums.
Just get the one you like, you'll be miking it anyway if you play in any larger club.

If you want rock sound check out:

If you want more gain chech:

If you're tight on a budget check:

Vox VT15:

If you're concerned about the power get a 30W version and you'll be fine.

Re: Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal?

Someone in a nearby town is selling a Peavey Valve King 112 50 watt. How would that be?

Re: Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal?

seriously, having a nice clean(or slightly driven) tube amp is the perfect platform for running drive and distortion pedals. the way that a tube amp interacts with drive pedals is unparalleled by any modeling amp or otherwise.

Re: Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal?

It's only 150 bucks. Gonna give em a call in the morning and see if it's still there.
