You really can't get the Filtertron sound with anything but that pickup or the clones...that is only one 'rockabilly' sound. P90's also get a great 'billy sound in an archtop, esp. the lower output varieties. The Phat Cat may be a little too fat...think clean and twangy, but full.

the custom shop offers a seymour duncan filtertron, you can have them wound any way you like, I have a set in a es-335. The bridge is overwound at 9.1 K, and the neck is the standard 4.1 K, these are the best pickups I have ever heard! Its all there - clarity without being shrill, midrange warmth, crisp bottom-end - no mud, good clean tone, nasty when driven.

There are a lot of different types of twang, and a lot of Duncan pups that can produce versions of them, but I've never heard any production Duncan that does anything that even remotely resembles the sound of a Filtertron.

I had this problem myself. $120 per pup does sound like a lot, but if is the sound you are really looking for save up and buy them. Luckily for me it was just a passing GAS attack, in about a week I had moved on to something else.

WOW!! I really appreciate all the feedback. I am really blown away. This really gives me somethings to think about.
I am curious if anyone has dropped TV Jones Classics in a Les Paul (any model) and what type sound they received. I know people primarily drop TV Jones, Filtertrons, and the like in semi-hollow bodies, but haven't heard much on them being used in Les Pauls.

Billy Gibbons has filtertrons in his Gretsch billy-bo guitars, listen to ZZ-Tops new Cd, its on some of the tracks

Also, Malcom young`s guitar parts for ACD/DC are all filtertrons, the combination of Angus`s Gibson T-top pickups, and Malcoms filtertrons gave them that huge sound, and of course all those Marshalls!

Have to agree with the statement that, "i do not think SD has a spot-on, or even close replica of the TV Jones/Filtertorns :blackeye: "
I want to get set of Phat Cats for my next Artcore semi-hollow w. Bigsby, and also close my eyes and get a set of TV Jones for my current AG75 - it will still be MUCH cheaper than a Setzer sig. model !
Do not know anyone who droped Filtertrons in a LP, but i do know of a guy (only saw the pic's though) who retro fitted his Jazzmaster with a set.
And man, does that thing l00k beautifull - i can only think how it must sound :smokin:
