Rockman Tone in 2017

Re: Rockman Tone in 2017

Not directly Rockman related, but this article had me thinking of this thread:

https://www.guitarworld.com/gear/th...l-schenkers-tone-on-ufos-only-you-can-rock-me

So, Michael's best rhythm tones came from a 5" Pignose practice amp? And a guitar with .009-.040 strings? One could almost believe that the regular guitar forum tropes are incorrect!

Of course, there's many things in the studio you can do to "fool" the listener.

It's funny, so many guitar players fail to even recognize the huge contribution the studio gives to (recorded) guitar tone; if at all.

The studio is as much a "member" of the band as any one else, and has by far the most expensive and complex "instruments".

This is kind of interesting. Harry Jacobson published a 1982 demo called "Bulletproof" recorded with a Rockman into a 4 track:

One of the guys I work with went to school to be a sound engineer. He was telling me about a session he did with Barry Goudreau. It seems Barry likes to stack his reverbs. It was a head-scratcher for me until it dawned on me that Eventide Space is a multitap reverb and in theory, is the same thing. Pretty cool IMO.

This is a cover of the "Pour Some Sugar on Me" song by YouTube user "Hack To Scratch Golf". All guitars are played with a Fender MIM strat through a Rockman x100 into GarageBand, with one exception that's highlighted in the notes:

Re: Rockman Tone in 2017

I'm feeling like this thread is justifying me never letting go of my Rockman X100. Just saying...

Didn't hear this before now. It is crazy how that tone really defined a decade.

Re: Rockman Tone in 2017

YouTube user Giulio Grandi Rockhead did a really enjoyable improvisation with his Rockman Sustainor:

Taylor Rhodes has made a holiday video for 2019. "Have Yourself a Hair Metal Christmas":

The guitar is an Agile AL-3200MCC with DiMarzio Transition pickups, played through a 1984 Rockman X100 and 1988 Rockman Sustainor 200 + Peavey EQ-215 + 1989 Rockman Stereo Chorus.

Re: Rockman Tone in 2017

Oh goody! Back in time for Christmas. Rockman would make a great stocking stuffer!!!!

Re: Rockman Tone in 2017

I certainly didn't intent for this thread to make it into a second decade when I started it! It only goes to show that there are still some enthusiasts out there, and if they can find a home here at SDUGF I for one think we are all the better off for it.

I still haven't got myself a Rockman rig OR a replacement for it, but I haven't written it off. Finding one under the Christmas tree would certainly be great!

Re: Rockman Tone in 2017

I’d rock Rockman gear all day long, but not as long as it costs Dumble prices (see the $10,000 Reverb listing, that was marked down to get to $10,000). There’s a number of other affordable reasonable routes to simulate or approximate that sound satisfactorily for me.

Re: Rockman Tone in 2017

I'm seeing prices on Reverb for the "original" Rockmans (not the "guitar ace" stuff from later) ~$299 - $399

the X100s and the like, to be precise

Re: Rockman Tone in 2017

I think the audio track for this video may have been previously released with a past video. The new video is a tad darker, but the dancing and guitar playing are fantastic:
