Rockstand 3 modification

I got this pretty cool 3 guitar stand a few months back - it's a Warwick Rockstand 3:

I've noticed that the foam they put on this thing isn't the greatest, and after 3-4 months it doesn't spring back or reset - it stays permanently mashed in. Now I probably would just return this thing, but I really like the stand and I'm assuming it's some cheap overseas foam they put on it that will probably give me cancer or whatever.

What I'm wondering is this - have any of you modified a stand like this before? I was thinking of trying a different foam, and maybe wrapping it with some cloth or something to protect my guitars. I have this cool Dunlop microfiber cloth for wiping down my instruments - I don't know if you could buy this stuff, but it seems like it might be a good covering for the stand.

I was looking at some webpage yesterday with someone's guitar collection, and an old guitar stand with foam rubber breaking down (due to heat, being generally cheap, shoddy product) and left a bunch of adhesive junk on the back of a very nice Stratocaster neck. Definitely not cool stuff in my book.

Re: Rockstand 3 modification

want my advice? don't bother with stands unless rehearsing/gigging, and keep your instruments in their cases, not only are they more climate controlled, but they also provide far superior protection against damage.
